Microsoft is discontinuing Windows Mixed Reality WMR

,

I keep seeing people that claim the HP Reverb G2 is dead with the latest windows update. Mine is working fine. What gives? Are these people crying “wolf”?

If you mean you are now on Windows 11 24H2, then that would indeed be a revelation i.e. that WMR has not been deprecated as announced.

I inadvertently allowed my windows 11 setup to update itself to 24H2 and it did indeed stop my Reverb G2 from working. So the only way I could fix the issue was to re install windows 10 and then upgrade back to windows 11 because if you make an install windows 11 media on USB it will be the 24H2 Version. A complete pain in the backside.!!!

It will work until you install the 24h2 update for Windows 11. So don’t do that.

Thanks to all. I thought I had been keeping all updates current, but I see I still have 23h2. phshew! No updates until I have the cash for a new headset.

You can keep W11 up to date with security patches. Annual updates like 23H2 or 24H2 add or expand Windows functionality and are optional.

I wish money was the solution. I bought Pimax Crystal Light and Quest 3 in the last few months to move away from WMR but sent them back for various reasons.

I’ve got a Reverb G2, and I’m thinking about getting the Crystal Light. It’s a big investment at $900, so I’m really hoping it’ll be worth it. I do like the G2, but the limited FOV is a bit disappointing. The Crystal Light has a slightly wider field of view, and I’m hoping that makes a noticeable difference.

Yes, me too. But I am going to wait a bit until it seems clear that Pima has dealt with their quality control issues.

Crystal has not only the wider FoV, but (what matters more) much bigger portion of image is clear and sharp. With cheap, plastic Fresnel lenses of my long forgotten G2 only ~20% of the image in the centre was sharp. In my Crystal ~75% of image is super sharp, with some blur appearing towards the edges. Assuming you will not receive an unit with faulty lenses what is reported by some Crystal buyers. You need to be sure you will have easy and reliable return policy when ordering Crystal. You may even consider comparing 2 units if you will have any doubts if your Crystal lenses are actually crystal clear.
I have the original Crystal (not light) with theoretically the same lenses (plus the option easily exchange them - useless BTW) and my lenses are just perfect.

Easier/better to just modernize your VR experience I should think

After my long and frustrating and beautiful journey with VR (Reverb G2 → Crystal → Quest 3), I have decided to take a break. I had a frustrating time with it the last couple of weeks and then it looks like ■■■■ in 2024, so I decided my VR is done for a couple of years until the next gen VR stuff comes out and the sim is working better in VR. I have my new Tobii and that can be my way of looking around. There is nothing like the VR experience. It has really taken me to amazing places. I think I’ve just had enough of the headaches for now. Gonna sell up my Q3 and give it a rest for a while.

virtual desktop got an update today 1.33.3 . now the msfs 2024 appears in games tab and i heard that latency improved too , anyone tried yet ?

Why not stay in VR in 2020? Are there features in 2024 that outweigh it for you?

the lightning colours and light affect photogrametry its a huge jump from 2020 . there is no going back

Maybe your world zone server deliver better?, for me is a jump backward in all of that and more, by the moment, maybe light?, though too much like haze/bright?, and it is backward also?. Waiting for the next fix to improve.

FS20 is a VR dream compared, to me, and FS24 a nightmare haha.

I think it is more just that I’m done with that way of flying for now. I got the GNS530 and G1000 units and I’m planning to get the Win Wing 737 CDU and I can’t use them in VR. I think I want to step out of VR until it takes another jump fwd. it’s been fun but it is time for a break.

Looks pretty amazing for me (Australia). Had the 737 model freeze on me a couple of times but aside from that it looks beautiful.

Also the aerodynamics are really different now which is great.

I just got the warning today that Windows Mixed Reality would be removed if I let Windows Update run.

I’ve long since moved on but at least it isn’t forced or silent.

I agree with that. If VR goes I will go back to railway modelling

I understand you will miss your trusty Reverb G2 or any other WMR headset, but the technology advanced in the meantime and possibly it’s the time to invest in a new headset (not WMR-based) which offers way better visuals compared to G2 with plastic Fresnel lenses.
