In my beautiful state of Oklahoma we have numerous military airspace that I think would be nice to be able to request passage clearance through even though FAA says you dont have to request.
+1
It would be cool if the route planner in the world map wouldn’t lead in low altitude me trough military airspaces (f.e. in Nevada)
Requesting clearance for entering restricted airspace isn’t scripted yet.
IRL perhaps possible but not in the sim.
Entering those airspaces will also not give you company by fighterjets and you will not receive a phone number which you have to call as soon as you’ve landed.
Maybe some day but It’s not high on the to-do list. [MODERATOR EDIT: Removed ping to team members]
You answered your own request, “FAA says you don’t have to request.” In reality, one can request and almost always receive “traffic advisory” service also known as flight following. I think what you are asking for is a kind of flight following but keep in mind that the default ATC is terribly unrealistic and this would really be a stretch for the developers.
Are you talking about Military Operations Areas (MOAs) or restricted areas?
For MOAs, you said it, you don’t need permission. You don’t even need to talk to anybody. What you can and should do is check the sectional chart tab to see when they’re generally active and at what altitude they exist (some you can fly under or over). You can also check NOTAMs or https://sua.faa.gov to see if the area is “hot” during your passage. You can also ask ATC to verify status while airborne (sometimes they go hot with little or no advance warning). You don’t have to do those, but it’s a Really Good Idea.
Either way, the military will often see where you are and play in the parts of the MOA that are away from you, but you should always keep extra alert for them when traversing.
For restricted areas, same deal - check altitudes and status first. (edit to say: Always assume they’re hot but you can also) confirm with ATC. If they’re inactive you can usually fly right through without talking to ATC. But I would always double check before assuming it’s inactive.
If they’re hot, you most likely won’t be able to enter at all. If they’re continuously hot (24/7/365), that’s when you can try to ask for clearance to enter on the controlling air to ground (A-G) frequency.
I think that this is not necessarily USA specific. In the UK we have Military Air Traffic Zones (MATZ) around military airfields and permission to transit is required. The whole of the UK is, I believe, a military Low Fly Area (LFA) and the area is broken down into discreet areas by number (eg I live within LFA 7 which is home to the Mach Loop). There are restrictions in some parts of these MATZ and LFA but there is nothing to simulate operating within MATZ or LFA in MSFS. It would be nice to have that interaction.
Sure, this is great info! He did ask about Oklahoma, so I answered with US-specific procedures, but I am not sure how a notional resolution would handle varying the various procedures (and severity of transgression, haha) one will find around the world.
In the US, inquiries regarding MOA status is almost a sidebar conversation (with lots of non-standard verbiage) and it depends on real-time knowledge (on ATC’s part) as to where the military aircraft are at the time and what they’re going to do, which is not always known.
Apologize in such a long delay for a reply. I am asking in regard to US airspace and might not understand the requirements. But I thought that if a person wanted to fly through MOA without going up or below, that it would add a bit more accuracy to the simulator. I thought I had read that FAA would like for a pilot to do so before entering MOAs. Sometimes some instructions might be given.
The biggest thing is that non-participating, VFR traffic has to exercise increased vigilance for the military traffic.
You can have a short conversation with ATC to ask about the status of the airspace, which leads back to the vigilance, but talking to ATC is not required at all. You can get most information you need about the airspace status from the sua website, save for short-notice activations, which goes back to asking ATC.
Misty MOA prevents straight to Canada flights from happening in the Rochester NY airspace which is why we can’t fly straight into Canada we have to go to Watertown or Buffalo to go into Toronto
