I am new to gaming and PC hardware. I was hoping to get some monitor recommendations that will work well for the hardware I have. I am looking for an ultra wide display and my budget is $~1k
My rig: Intel i7-10700F - 32GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super 8GB. The game is on an SSD.
Not knowing much about gaming hardware, I got myself a Dell U3818DW (I use 3440 X 1440 res), which I know may not have been a good choice. I am happy to move that to my office and get a new monitor.
When you are only playing flight simulators 60 Hz should be enough. If you are also playing other games, where you reach higher FPS rates, buy one with at least 144 Hz.
resolution:
Depending on your GPU, I would consider having a monitor that matches the performance of your GPU. Playing 4K on a 2070, could possibly cause struggle and performance loss.
GSync:
When using a Nvidia GPU that is capable of GSync, I also would get a monitor with GSync.
Thank you for responding. I do not play another other games. I am a student pilot and using Flight Sim when I am not flying the real thing.
Ah yes, I am only learning about GSync only now and have been looking for a monitor that is capable.
I also omitted to mention that I was driving a second 4k display from the same GPU, which is also probably impacting performance. I changed the res of that device to 1920 X 1080, so hopefully that should help.
Also shouldnât be a problem, but a higher resolution will increase the workload of your GPU. F.e the new RTX series is perfect for 4K devices, but performs worse on lower resolution. The RTX 2xxx series runs good on lower resolutions I guess, but will struggle at 4K.
All I want to say, you can even get a 4K monitor, but a higher resolution will increase the load on your GPU, so you will have less frames per second.
So, I am using that monitor together with a RTX3080 and I am playing on 150 Render Scaling. Looks really good, I donât need a higher resolution.
Yes but 150 rendering scale bumped up on a low res panel doesnât really match a high res quality in quality tbh Atm the sim is heavily dependent on the CPU.
So what I have gathered so far is that I have the wrong display and not the best GPU. Even if I did replace the GPU, I would still need a better display anyway.
So my path forward would be to get a display that is capable of GSync and then run that at a resolution that my GPU can actually drive and then hopefully get a better experience than what I have currently. Does that sound right? My preference would be an ultrawide display that is 34", which I could drive at a lower res.
The best approach would be to first get benchmark information about your GPU (YT videos etc.). There you can see the performance in different games on different resolutions.
You can see there, which resolution will perform good. Now, if you see that the GPU is capable of a 34 inch monitor with resolution XYZ, search a monitor. If not, search a GPU for the resolution of the monitor you want to get.
Refresh rate, mips, screen size, type of panel material, stand (believe it or not, how it sits on desk is important), OLED burn in? Things you should know.
Let us know what you settle on, and wider once have good and bad points, especially can you use something real wide in your space?
The LG one will give you a performance increase, when it comes to FPS. The visuals will be slightly worse then the Dell one, because the Dell monitor got a higher resolution. But, you will have less FPS on the Dell one, caused by the resolution.
The FPS increase when using the LG will depend on the game, but you possibly reach up to +15 FPS more with the lower resolution monitor.
Thank you. I changed the res of the Dell to 2560X1080 and also played FS (the only reason I am doing this) at that resolution. It was ok and I am assuming it will only get better with a true gaming monitor (the LG) which has faster refresh and G-SYNC. The Dell is a âprofessionalâ monitor - more for design and office type of work, IMO.
Having read the thread, I may have missed something, but I donât really understand what problem you are trying to solveâŠor why the monitor you have isnât suitable.
Iâm no expert, and this is just my opinion based on the experience I have. Firstly, flight sims, MSFS included, actually have pretty modest monitor requirements unlike a lot of âshooterâ games where rapid response time and high refresh rate are required. You donât need a 120mhz monitor to run the sim that will likely never approach the 60mhz of the most basic monitors available. Same with Vsync/Gsync. My perhaps faulty understanding, is that you only need this if your âgameâ and your other hardware are capable of generating more fps than the refresh rate of your monitor.
The main, and possibly the only monitor-related performance factor, is the number of pixels your gpu is pushing. I donât see any reason your rig canât drive your monitor at reasonable settings and at itâs native resolution. Keep in mind, that any other monitors you have connected also have to serviced by the gpu. If you can, you should always run a monitor at itâs native resolution. So 4K gets you a nice picture, but is very hard on fps, while 1080p gets you lots more fps, but picture quality and the field of view is compromised. IMHO, at this point some version of 1440p is kind of a sweet spot.
Again, IMHO, anything above 30fps in MSFS, so long as it is smooth and stitch-free is perfectly fine. I have the Samsung 49" that is similar to he one you asked about, except itâs 1440 vs 1080 vertical (5120x1440). I get smooth flight at low-30âs in Ultra and low 40âs in HighâŠI find this just fine.
SoâŠtrying to find the bottom line here, if you want to concentrate on MSFS, use the monitor you have, do without the addon 4k monitor if you can while âflyingâ and run your present monitor at itâs native resolution. The only thing that really counts is how many pixels you are driving and a fancy monitor with low response time and massive refresh rate will do nothing to improve your MSFS experience. (Different discussion if you may want to get into more mainstream gaming).
