I would like the marshaller to be further back too. That wil give a better final phase upon arrival at the gate. He disappears under the plane so you no longer can see his last stop sign.
When you arrive at the gate with an airliner, there will not always be a marshaller there, but if he is there you should be able to see him. If you stand too far back, the jetway will not connect to the aircraft.
