Move to 4K Worth It?

Have a 40 series GPU on the way and I know I would get the most out of it at a higher resolutions. I am currently on a 38" ultra wide (3840x1600) and I really like the size of the monitor. Would a move to 4K really be worth it from what I’ve currently got?

Not looking to go to triples at the moment either and would like to stick to a single screen. Any 38" or similarly sized 4K monitors you’d recommend?

Thank you in advance!

I don’t think a higher resolution is that much of an improvement in MSFS. I switched up from a 1080p 24:9 to a 1440p 32:9 and didn’t see much of a difference. Would gladly have bought a 1080p again but there weren’t any in 32:9.
The wider field of view is great though if you can fit it on your desk

My opinion is completely the oppositte to that of Mr Woof.

I only fly airliners, so I have to do a lot of reading from those computers and EFB. The clarity of text when going to 4K is worth the upgrade just by itself (43" screen). I can honestly not understand that anyone can use the sim below 4K with this type of flying. Zooming all the time on the screens is just too intrusive for me, it doesn´t feel “natural” (in fact, I´d want a bigger screen and higher resolution if I could…).

It´s only the way I personally use the sim. If I stayed most of the time looking at external cameras, 4K probably wouldn´t be worth it.

Just a different opinion.

It’s definitely worth it.
What I can recommend is to use frame generation and set vsync to 30 fps this still creates a very smooth experience and is power efficient.

If you are getting a 4090 then you may as well get a 4K monitor. It’s what I did when I got my 4090. Even if it did not make much difference in FS, you’ll still see improvements elsewhere.

I believe the resolution should be related to screen size. Of course you gain a little bit of sharpness by going high-DPI, but what I’m really looking for is just having a big screen so I can zoom out more and see more of the cockpit without having to move the camera.
Personally, I would say the optimum sizes are:
24’’ - 1080p
32’’ - 1440p
43’’ - 4k
These also match Windows display scaling. All look good in 100%.

Right now I have a LG OLED C2 42’’ 4k and it’s perfect. Great colors. True black, close to 0 latency (OLED) and 120Hz with G-Sync.

As an example I can zoom out the A320 cockpit to the point I see the PFD, ND, ECAM and the AP panel up to V/S at all time clearly.

I think the HDR level is as or more important. I went from a 27" 1440p HDR400 to a 32" 2160p HDR1000 monitor, and the difference was, to be perfectly honest, amazing.

At my viewing distance, the upgrade to 4K was ‘noticable.’ But the difference between HDR400 and HDR1000 was the game changer. Deeper blacks, higher max luminance, and better color gamut, zone level dimming - all contribute to a picture that made the upgrade well worth the fairly steep cost.

I still use the 27" 2K monitor for charts, SPAD, and other programs.

I use airliners mainly as well and totally get what you mean about clarity being important there. My thinking though was the PPI on my current monitor is about 110. The PPI on a 43" 4k monitor is less than 108. So would my current monitor actually be more clear than a 42-43" 4K screen? Or am I understanding PPI incorrectly?

Agreed – I fly mostly small planes, but I fly with a head tracker for view panning/translation and don’t use the zoom cameras much. Being able to read both computerized avionics and small analog dial labels at a natural head position at 2160p is really nice.

The PPI might be lower if it’s physically bigger but remember the scale of things like instruments will be based on the vertical size of the screen – so you’ll now have 2160 pixels not 1600 pixels covering the same vertical visible region of the instrument panel.

Interesting, thank you. So the 4K would be noticeably more clear than my current 3840x1600 38"?

I went from a 27" FHD (1920x1080) to a 34’ UWQHD (3440x1440) monitor that where almost the exact same height. While the resolution bump was nice the wider aspect is what I found more beneficial and immersive.

If I where to go to 4K I would have to have hardware that would support 5K Ultra-wide (5120 x 2160) and those monitors are still $1000+.

I also find any DLSS mode to cause to much loss of image quality for airliner displays. So if going up in resolution means requiring DLSS to get good frame rates. Im not sure it would be worth it.

In my experience yes; I bumped up from 3440x1440 wide 38" to 3840x2160 regular 32", along with a suitable GPU update. I lost some peripheral vision by going down to 16:9 but got a big bump up in clarity for instruments and visual runway line-ups.

As ANCRM114 mentions they do make ultrawides with 5K width that rival the 16:9 4K displays in total density! All depends what trade-offs you’re willing to make between size, clarity, brightness, and money…

So I just finished the latest dev live stream and apparently coming soon is a change to mask out airliner screens from DLSS so they don’t loose quality. I don’t know if this will be a configurable feature or not and what if anything needs to be changed on the aircraft.

If they can control the glass screens independently enough to selectively apply TAA or DLSS, then maaaaaybe they’re on the path towards truly useful screen popouts.

You can try to increase the rendering scale in the sim first, thats free if your GPU can handle it, I use 120% on my 3440x1440 and thats sharp enough for me.
