Hi all.
When I installed MSFS originally last August, it went onto my C drive. I subsequently changed it to my D drive. So what I currently have is this:
C:\Users\myusername\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe
D:\Users\myusername\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe
On the D Drive, I mapped it exactly like the C drive, but the only things that are there are the LocalCache/Packages/Community+Official folders.
On my C drive I have everything else:
AC
AppData
LocalCache/Packages/Commnity+Official (these are EMPTY on my C drive, this is contained on D)
LocalState
RoamingState
Settings
SystemAppData
TempState
So my question is, is there a disadvantage to running everything on one drive, and having my Community and Official folders on a second drive?
And if there is, how do I move everything from C to D? I know people have moved their Community and Official folders from one drive to another, but that’s not what I’m talking about. I want to move the entire thing from the C to the D drive. Or maybe would I just be better off uninstalling and starting from scratch if that’s what I want to do? (Having my Community and Official folders backed up in that case).
Any thoughts would be appreciated!
I moved mine from my C: drive ssd to my E:drive Nvme M.2, but i did a reinstall of windows and then had to reinstall all of msfs to point to my e drive after creating an Msfs folder in e:Drive
you cant move these files as
A) you can 't really move programs unless you use simlinks which i wasnt comfortable with
B) its a PITA but its a fresh install which is cleaner if you have the time and bandwidth
Hope that helps
It really does help, thank you. Do you think there’s any advantage to doing it? My C drive is a “regular” hard drive, my D drive is an SSD.
You cannot move everything from the C:\ (or boot) drive.
Flight Simulator 2020 must have files on the C: drive.
This is the initial 1.06 GB download that is stored on the C:\ drive.
The following 170 GB can be installed on any drive you wish as long as that drive has enough free storage that the FS2020
download needs.\

Ah, okay, so I’m good like I am. Thank you!
Look at your UserCfg.opt file at the end of the file.
That is where additional 170 GB is stored.
If the same data is stored on your C: and D: drive, then it is duplicated.
You can delete the drives files that is not in the UserCfg.opt
Nope, it’s fine as far as that goes, nothing duplicated. Just my Community and Official folders on the D drive.

Does it make a difference in performance having it in a different drive?
I’ve been thinking of doing this but I don’t know if it makes a difference.
As far as FS2020 is concerned, it will make no difference.
But, what will is the speed of the drives.
If you move it from a slower (HD or SSD) to a faster (NVMe PCIE SSD)
drive, FS2020 will run faster.
Then I don’t think it’ll be worth it for me to go through that hassle. My other 2 drives are the same SSD and my boot drive.
The only reason why I wanted to move it was too keep msfs on its own drive individually without anything else installed.
You can move all of MSFS including the 1.6GB core installation if you are on Steam. Being locked to C:\ for the core files is one of the limitations of the MS Store version.
How much faster? My C drive is just a plain hard drive. I don’t even know what it is frankly. My D is an SSD. How much of a difference would it make if my C drive were an SSD?
