I am planning on moving MSFS to a new SSD as my original install drive is almost full. Has anyone had success using the “Move” command? Does this move everything including the core program and the various downloads like World Updates, City Updates etc.? Does it move the Community Folder as well? I have read several post describing the moving process, but, seeing as how MSFS is a “store” program, the move function would seem the easiest. Many thanks for your help!
Personally I doubt it will work.
I had to move MSFS to a larger SSD once and wasted so much time finding a way, that I easily could have installed it twice - that does not negate the possibilty that I simple was incapable of finding a good solution myself of course ![]()
One other thing: is your actually MSFS installation clogging up your drive, or is it the Community folder?
If it’s the latter, you can use “MSFS Addons Linker” to simply move everything from your Community folder on the new drive and just link it to the Community folder.
The “game” is the roughly 1.9GB download and installation that takes place before the Content is then downloaded.
As it states, Windows can move the “game” and it does that perfectly well.
Clearly, it does not move the contents, either official or community and you must do that yourself.
Here is the guide to moving from one PC to another and it works equally well when moving from one location to another on the same PC.
I copy and paste the entire Onestore folder.
Install the game anew in the new drive.
Stop the installation after a few seconds after it’s created the folder structure.
Paste the Onestore folder.
And it starts like it has always been there.
Thanks for the reply. Once the simulator is moved to the new SSD, where do I place the official and community folders? Thanks again…
It’s all in the attached link, but here it is:
- Do a backup copy of the Official and Community folders installed on your old system. Some of your settings, like your keybindings are saved into the cloud and will import when you log into your account.
- Create a folder on the drive of your choice (We recommend giving it a simple name like “Microsoft Flight Simulator” or “MSFS”)
- Copy-paste the backup folders inside your new folder.
That takes care of the Official and Community folders.
It will be far better to uninstall the game and reinstall it, then do this:
1.Run the game, it will go so far and then offer you, at the lower right hand side of your screen, the opportunity to direct the Content installation.
2. Once you reach the installation manager screen, select the install Package Path
3. Select the folder you created earlier (example: “D: MSFS”) and let the installation manager scan the existing files.
MSFS will then check the folder, find all of the files that it needs in the Official folder that you copied and pasted and run without downloading anything else.
It will automatically see your Community folder in its new location and all of your community addons will still be there and work as they did before.
Thanks…Going to give it a try when I get home from work! I’ll let you know how it goes…
