MSFS-2020 new VR headset needed - Windows 11 25H2 - Mac Pro 7,1

I have been away from Flight Simulator for a very long time.

I updated to Windows 11 25H2 earlier this week and it went smoothly. However this was without realising that this would kill off my Reverb G2 headset (Windows Mixed Reality portal not working)

I have Radeon software 21.30.44.20 running Radeon W6800X 32GB MPX module on Apple Mac Pro. This is the newest that supports the Apple specific Radeon Pro W6800X MPX.

So that means the Oasis drivers won’t work, according to my research. I need some specific Radeon drivers (25.92) - not going to happen. I think the Reverb G2 finished now. The unlock works but the SteamVR doesn’t detect it with error 436.

Computer specs:

Mac Pro 7,1
Intel W3275M 2.5ghz 28 core
Radeon Pro W6800X MPX 32GB (4x thunderbolt ports)
Windows 11 25H2
2x LG Ultrafine Evo 6K screens (connected with USB-C to Displayport adapters)
96GB ECC RAM 2933mhz DDR4.

I had looked at Playstation VR2 headset and adapter which seems reasonably priced, anyone using that? I don’t yet have MSFS2024 but might also get it.

I don’t really want to buy an entirely new computer for huge money just for MSFS and VR.

I had to do a similar thing about a year ago, my trusty G2 finally died & I went through what you are going through. I narrowed it down to the Pimax Lite, Pico & the Quest 3. After a tonne of homework & a discussion with someone knowledgeable in the VR & sim world I ended up going with the Quest 3 & have not looked back since… It will grow as my PC & sim does but it is also adjustable enough that it will run quite well on my current system. I run Virtual Desktop & with some sim & VD as well as headset setting adjustment & tweaks it runs very well & it is far better than the Reverb on my system, I would say that it’s about 20% better than the Reverb. Another great thing with the Quest is that it can do a lot more other than just be a sim device so that gives it some great flexibility if you so desire. It is also untethered so no cable & if power becomes an issue it can be extended via aftermarket parts. Another great plus for the Quest is that it has a large market therefore parts & repairs are more easily sourced. This helps in a regional area.

Hope this helps you somewhat, there is life after G2!

Very helpful, thanks for the info.

I’ll probably end up going down this path with Quest 3. I initially looked at Sony Playstation VR2. Yes it has OLED displays but it also is lower resolution than the Reverb G2, that excluded it right away.

I grabbed MSFS2024 yesterday also - this installed smoothly but had a sting in the tail with “shader model 6.6 error”.

Again a bootcamp/Apple/AMD drivers issue. I was able to manually attempt to install AMD W6800 drivers (for the blue coloured PC GPU) but these caused crash to desktop in windows. Windows restore points thankfully work.

So it looks like I’ll be also finding an ASRock 9070XT 16Gb GPU. This is the only one that appears to fit in the 2019 Mac Pro, the others are all too long. It seems like it will work in Windows, but not macOS as Apple doesn’t want to do drivers for it.

All done - got the Meta Quest 3 512GB. And got the Asrock Radeon RX9070XT Challenger, this card fits perfectly. Others are too long.

Necessary to have is the Belkin AUX power cable kit for Mac Pro 2019, use the 2x 8-pin cables connected to the backplane board power connectors and the GPU.

I didn’t need to do anything for drivers in W11, I left the standard Apple/AMD drivers for the W6800X Duo and was able to use this new card for specific apps. I just left the monitors connected to the W6800X. GPU temps are quite low, perhaps the big flow through cooling helps.

In MacOS Tahoe 26.5 the RX9070XT shows up as a graphics device (generic) and doesn’t do anything. It doesn’t seem to cause any issues either. That seemed to go smoothly.

I also took out the Apple Afterburner card, with that in everything is just way too crowded. I put the afterburner card in the other Mac Pro.

One observation with FS2020, the RX9070XT doesn’t like 6K resolution. 5K is fine, 4K very good, but 6K no go. The W6800X 32gb card will manage 6K without stuttering, but frame rates are average.

MSFS2024 seems to run very smoothly. There appears to be life left in the old machine still.

The Meta Quest 3 I will setup tomorrow.

I have the Quest 3 connected, nothing else installed but I’m stuck that FS2020 will not go into VR mode.

Every time I click the but to switch to VR (or press CTRL+TAB) nothing happens. I have latest Meta Link software, I have restarted computer, restarted Microsoft Waiting Simulator 2020 multiple times - it just doesn’t work.

Meta Link will connect to the computer via the USB-C cable and shows the desktop. I have also allowed “unknown sources” in the meta link app.

I have spent hours at this. Windows 10 with Reverb G2 just worked, immediately, this doesn’t.

I’d strongly recommend using Virtual Desktop if you have a good WiFi setup, because it works so much better (for me and many others) than Meta’s software. It does cost though (about £18 I think) but it was worth it. Everything “just works” and it’s got some brilliant features to enable mixed reality and let you pass through your hands so you can still see physical controls. It also uses its own custom vr runtime that gives a bit better performance than steam vr.

I am afraid the WIFI isn’t good enough for that. Other solutions?

Is there anything strange that could stop this by having two GPUs?

I can’t remove the W6800X as I need that for MacOS.

Surely the RX9070XT would be supported?
