I don’t think we need to ask the CM - it’s pretty clear to us. The developer of the Cessna Citation X is a third-party company, FlightFX. Being sold on the Marketplace like many other add-ons doesn’t make it a first-party aircraft.
Maybe. Many of the first party planes (or parts of them) were developed outside Microsoft and Asobo, but were commissioned as first party planes. And, FlightFX is a “1st Party Developer” for Archer, Jetson, Joby…
Regardless, we don’t decide what Microsoft defines as first party - so, I’m asking them for their official designation on this. Requesting an official booth review ![]()
Excellent resource! Thanks for the hard work on this..
Replay wasn’t definitive to overturn, therefore the call stands.
Edited top post to separate these Marketplace Exclusives.
I asked FFX on their Discord, Awemeter (who is the FFX Community Manager) replied definitively that it was solely a 3rd party FFX aircraft, so I’ll go with that unless MSFS themselves clarify differently.
Also noticed a new Playlist on the MSFSOfficial YT channel for these Exclusives (with only the X in it) so more are incoming. Likely the Boom, and maybe a Phenom? (correction, Preator?)
The Boom is a Famous Flyer, no? And I’m unaware of an incoming Phenom, unless you mean the Praetor, which I think has been said to be the next in the Expert Series to join the very lonely ATR.
That sounds right - although the Boom isn’t out yet, I think coming Dec 8th?
Thanks for the correction on Praetor 600. My brain is fried from trying to track these. They announced a partnership on March 14 this year. Can’t wait.
No problem! This is a fantastic resource you’re assembling, and it will take a village to maintain/tweak it, so it’s great to see you’re open to (and have implemented) some feedback whenever the Community may have some.
Thanks again for doing this - it’s already been pinned in the official MSFS discord server for quick reference.
Thanks for taking the time to check with FFX! We now have confirmation that Cessna Citation X is indeed a 3rd-party aircraft, not first-party. So it seems to me that it should probably be removed from this thread, which is about first-party aircraft.
To your earlier question of what defines First-Party, I think you’ve forced me to think more clearly about it:
- The development, contracted by MS vs independent 3rd party
- The availability, exclusive to MS, or available independently.
Since it is only available from the First Party, I didn’t want to exclude it entirely. So I’m following Microsoft’s own organization of keeping it listed, in this separate “Exclusive Series” category which specifies that it’s developed by 3rd party, but exclusively available from MS.
More are coming, so I think it’s useful to users to keep track of them here.
You might want to consider changing the title of the thread - the current one is a bit misleading, since it suggests it’s only about first-party aircraft.
It’s only available from MS, and as I’ve separated it in to the Exclusive Series with the explanation that it is developed by 3rd party, but only available from MS, I don’t think anyone will be confused, and it’s useful to have the list. Thanks for the feedback.
Personally I will disagree here - there are many products that are only available through the Marketplace (though not part of the “Exclusive Series”). If Marketplace exclusivity is the bar, then I would (much to my horror) expect to see MScenery, LVFR, and others on this list. The bar, for me, remains the relatively clear “is Microsoft’s name found in the ‘developer’ field on the Marketplace?"
But I don’t intend this semantics subject to damper this otherwise very useful and appreciated thread, of course ![]()
With all due respect, I still think Citation X shouldn’t really be part of this thread. I’m not sure what the original intention behind the topic was, but the title clearly suggests it’s about first-party aircraft and including a 3rd-party one makes it a bit inconsistent.
Also, the fact that it’s only available on the Marketplace doesn’t really change that - as @Zadma rightly pointed out, many other 3rd-party aircraft are Marketplace-only as well.
I’m also wondering about Local Legends, for example NAMC YS-11 since that one is developed by iniBuilds, not Microsoft/Asobo, so it doesn’t really fit the first-party definition either.
The topic is generally fine, but the lack of consistency and the mixing of first-party with 3rd-party aircraft is a bit surprising and honestly, a little confusing.
At one point the term “2nd party” was being utilized. It may have been coined by @CasualClick
Local Legends belong on this list (in my opinion) as much as any other default aircraft that’s developed by a first-party partner (see iniBuilds A320neo V2). It’s developed by iniBuilds, but it’s owned by Microsoft - and that I think is the sticking point, and why it shows (or at least it should show) in the Marketplace as being created by Microsoft/iniBuilds.
I can’t check the Marketplace right now since I’m testing SU4 beta. If the Marketplace indeed lists it as something like Microsoft/iniBuilds, then I agree it could be considered part of the first-party group. Otherwise, maybe someone could double-check that?
Personal Comments and Observations
We now use the term “Dev Partner” to indicate firms who build products “On Commission” for Microsoft - i.e., our recently revealed XB-1 from Flight FX, as well as the eVTOLs that came with MSFS 2024.
I want to thank everyone for the debate - because the difficulty and confusion I encountered while trying to understand the Microsoft offerings was my motivation for starting a list in the first place.
My other motivation was to put a focus on the quantity of planes, testing and giving feedback about them, to promote demand for more ongoing bug fixing and updates to the fleet. Please use the Poll threads for feedback to help get improvements!
The MS Marketing department should consider a more official page (or database) dedicated to casual exploration of each plane on the official website - with details like engine type, max altitude, range, passengers, IFR / VFR rating, etc. it would help people to understand and choose.
I had taken screenshots of every plane’s thumbnail (from the poster) but I worried that I wouldn’t be able to fit them properly in the limited capability of the Discourse Table function of the forum. The poster does show each Dev / Partner name.
If everyone really wants me to remove the Citation X, I will. I thought it was useful to include this category since it does help understand Microsoft’s overall packages and series for MSFS aircraft… This one is a new category that blurs the line between 1st and 3rd party, and since more are coming I included it. But I will let this be a community-defined list!
