I’m trying to figure out whether this is an MSFS 2024 issue, a Meta Quest issue, Virtual Desktop, or simply the current state of VR. At this point, I’ve spent days testing different settings, and I’m running out of ideas.
My system:
-
Intel i9-13900K
-
RTX 5080
-
64 GB DDR5 RAM
-
Meta Quest 3
What I’ve tested so far:
-
Meta Link and Virtual Desktop.
-
Different resolutions and OpenXR settings.
-
Different bitrates.
-
Medium Off Screen Cache (this helped more than High or Ultra).
-
Different Terrain LOD and Object LOD values.
-
Different graphics settings.
The biggest issue is that VR performance seems to degrade over time while flying.
A typical flight looks like this:
-
Departure is smooth.
-
Cruise is usually excellent.
-
Descent starts out fine.
-
As I get closer to the destination, performance gradually gets worse.
-
Sometimes the biggest drop happens on final.
-
Other times it’s after landing while taxiing to the gate.
-
Once it starts degrading, it usually doesn’t recover.
This has happened at multiple airports, so it doesn’t seem to be tied to one specific scenery. Even airports that should be relatively light can end up performing poorly by the time I arrive.
I’ve also noticed that the iniBuilds A350 feels considerably heavier than the PMDG 777 on my system. The PMDG aircraft generally leave me with more performance headroom.
I spent a lot of time comparing Meta Link and Virtual Desktop. Surprisingly, Virtual Desktop has been the more stable option for me, even though I’m running it entirely over Wi-Fi because my router is too far from my PC to run an Ethernet cable. Meta Link, even with a wired USB connection, has consistently given me worse performance in MSFS 2024, especially during arrival.
Another thing that really confuses me is that lowering graphics settings doesn’t always improve performance. Sometimes it actually feels worse than running higher settings, making it very difficult to determine what’s really causing the issue.
My question is:
-
Has anyone experienced this gradual VR performance degradation during a flight?
-
Does VR performance slowly get worse for you as well?
-
Is this an MSFS 2024 issue, a Quest 3 limitation, a Virtual Desktop/OpenXR issue, or simply how VR behaves today?
-
Has anyone found a reliable fix that actually prevents the degradation instead of just delaying it?
-
Has anyone else found that Meta Link performs worse than Virtual Desktop in MSFS 2024?
-
Has anyone noticed lower graphics settings actually making VR performance feel worse?
I don’t mind lowering a few settings if necessary, but what puzzles me is that this isn’t a constant low FPS issue. The simulator starts out running well and then progressively loses performance during the flight.
I’d especially like to hear from other Quest 3 users, particularly those with high-end PCs, to find out whether this is something specific to my setup or a more common issue.
