Microsoft will get their $$$ anyway for data streaming
but we will recover all bugs and add what WE want to the Engine!

Probably not so easily done, since it would expose Asoboâs proprietary game engine that they also use in other games.
Additionally, commercial third party components used would be an issue, too.
Probably the same as what I would think tomorrow. Itâs a nice idea that would never happen. Also, Iâm sure huge progress would be made quickly, but with so many devs. pulling in different directions, and the underpinnings to make it all work are owned by MS, I donât see whatâs in it for them. And I for one wonât be paying to stream scenery data!
Who would provide compatibility with the servers, multiplayer, Xbox and third party content?
None of that would have to be a problem if there are official builds released from the source tree (where anyone can submit patches to be reviewed and possibly accepted).
That said, I donât see this happening in a thousand years.
Since the weather is scheduled to remain âclosedâ, I imagine the platform will remain âclosedâ.
Lets see how things develop after the 27th. I think we can be confident, that the MSFS development team is aware that the whole world will hold them to a greater standard (than this community so far has). Especially since they have reached out to the whole world with this Xbox version, not to mention with the soon to come Win 11 and how it touts MSFS too.
A super resolution microscope comes to mind.
Interesting times for flight simulation. ![]()
Why is this marked Solution ? I donât see why this would be a âsolutionâ for anything.. itâs an opinion, I do agree with it, but still an opinion.. It wonât happen any time soon..
My four cents on the subject: 0) current runtime license isnât free, so a PD release of source code would be silly 1) itâs too early to release it in PD and 2) the MSFS servers should be able to handle separate and unsigned builds which is only safe when things stop changing.. and 3) when theyâll do PD, it will probably be for PC only.. in 3-5 years, maybe ? Iâd love to study the shaders !
The same was said about Microsoft supporting open source. Iâd leave the door cracked for potential opportunities in this space. Microsoft is one of the biggest contributors to the open source movement - Github anyone?
Like ATC we need some order to it not chaos.
Sure, they own the place nowadays (?) great website Github.. and lots of VS2019 work is put there, VS2019 is still free.. but there are not so many Microsoft sources, as far as I know. There are examples, e.g. for DX-11 and DX-12.
Microsoft putting its stuff PD may have been true once for Windows 2000, they released its sources 4 years after replacement.. or for .NET libraries published, when they looked for free testing by the developers community.. but I havenât seen Microsoft Excel in the public domain, or any other MS application programs or games !
Never going to happen, for so many technical, legal, and financial reasons.
As the API and SDK mature, the platform will be more open to a variety of development. I think the addition of a airport (and potentially scenery) gateway will go a long way toward the community being able to contribute to the base sim.
I think X-Plane does a good job with the above points. They also have had longer to work on it as well.
It would also be nice if a new DRM system could be made so that Premium/Delux and third party content could be modified with community add-ons but still restrict launching the plane for only those who purchased it. But I donât see this as a big priority and I think eventually the Premium/Delux planes will eventually become unpopular as better payware and freeware come out.
If you want an open source Flight Simulator check out Flight Gear.
You canât make it open source. MSFS is Microsoft and Asobo property. Only they can make it open source and that isnât going to happen. Why even make a post about this? Itâs ludicrous.
To think you could somehow take it away from them is just bizarre. I donât get it.
You want a flight sim? Write it. There is at least one open source flight sim. Why not make that into your dream? That would be free and legal as long as you follow the open source rules.
And why do you think an open source army would do better than MS/Asobo on this? Iâm not knocking open source. Iâm a big believer and run Linux on my serious system. But even though open source software has a lot going for it, why do you think the public (even the coding public) would do a better job than paid developers?
Also, a lot of support for open source software comes from companies that make their living off of supplying/configuring it, or making software that runs on it. They contribute to the overall project - a lot - because it is in their interests to. Who will pick up that charge for Flight Simulator?
The whole premise of this topic is ludicrous and it should be closed.
I hate the idea. I like the direction MS and Asobo are heading. Theyâve got real talent in place already, and have stated publicly many times that they welcome partnerships. Jorg has repeatedly said, if youâve got something cool, please get in touch with them. A perfect example is their inclusion of the Working Title devs into the sim. They recently found a partner to work with them on gliders as well.
âIf you have more of that, please call meâ, Jorg
