MSFS reboots PC after the last update

Do you have any add-ons in your Community folder? If yes, please remove and retest before posting.
No.

Are you using Developer Mode or made changes in it?
No.

Brief description of the issue:
After the update the PC completely reboored during the first start up. After that MSFS reboots the PC everytime I am at the menu and try to access the content manager to download the latest stuff. It’s an instant reboot without warning. Everytime.

Provide Screenshot(s)/video(s) of the issue encountered:
Not possible because the PC reboots entirely. Imagine a black screen and you get the picture…

What’s up?

In addition: I have the Steam version. In the Steam folder the MSFS folder is only 1.4 GB… I validated all files and that was done in no time. Did the updater perhaps delete the entire sim? In which folder should the main files reside on my SSD’s?

This sounds suspiciously like an overload. Please post your system specs, including…

  • power supply
  • motherboard
  • CPU
  • GPU
  • RAM
  • Virtual memory setting

Power supply: Seasonic S12G-660
Motherboard: Asrock Z97 Extreme6
CPU: Intel i7 4790K
GPU: GTX 1080
RAM: 16 GB Crucial DDR3 PC3-12800
Virtual memory: no idea, default Windows 10, I didn’t change a thing.

All the above is running at stock speeds, no overclocking. Everything worked fine until just now (MSFS since the beta last year) and it’s only MSFS that’s causing this reboot since I update it earlier today. I am running ETS2 (beta 1.40) as I am typing this without any problems.

Check your CPU and GPU temperatures.

Windows 10 - Virtual Memory

  • Press the Windows key.
  • Type “SystemPropertiesAdvanced”. ( …
  • Click on “Run as administrator.” …
  • Click on “Settings…” You’ll see the performance options tab.
  • Select the “Advanced” tab. …
  • Select “Change…”. …

With 16GB physical memory, it is recommended to have 16GB of virtual memory available.
This has solved a number of issues for users.

Okay, well, my computer is totally fine. I just tried to run MSFS once more to check the temps (GPU was at 58C btw) and then I was greeted by the MSFS installation screen. Asking me where to install 153.61 GB of data… So apparently the updater did indeed totally screw up my install and now I have to start from scratch again. Well, no thank you, not now, I’m done with it. I’ll continue playing ETS2 for the moment being and see whenever I feel like reinstalling MSFS all over again. Seriously, what a ■■■■ updater this was…

You did the 153G update thing to yourself, When you Verify the MSFS 2020 files with Steam, it pretty much wipes all the content the game downloads after. Now you know so don’t do that in the future if you want to avoid redownloading the entire game, yet again.

As for your reboot. I had something somewhat similar happen the other day for the first time when clicking on the world map. I was somewhat pointing the blame to my newer 3090 in my system as it is known to pull 450W~ on a moments notice and since VSYNC doesn’t seem to work in the menu, well that can cause a spike for sure. You have older hardware and I am curious how old your PSU may be at this point? Even with a 4th Gen Intel and a 1080, your 660W PSU may possibly be getting near the end of its life if its anything close to the same age as your 4th Gen CPU. However you may also want to take a look in your motherboard bios and check to see if you have any sort of options or “Surge Protection” within the power or cpu settings as this may also cause the PC to shutdown/reboot due to a spike in load that it thinks is out of spec. I actually had mine turned on and since disabling, so far the reboots have subsided so far (Also happed in CP2077 so it wasn’t just MSFS for me.)

Is there anything in the Eventlog?

If it says unexpected restart, this normally indicates hardware or external (eg power dip).

Please confirm you didnt do any BIOS updates recently.

Some Seasonic PSU’s are known to have an instant power delivery issue. I have one too (750W), and have had 2 ‘insta’ reboots when running MSFS, but nothing since. This was just after getting my 3080. I doubt a 1080 will do that though.

Okay, well, that settles it… I am done for now with MSFS. No need to reinstall it right now, which isn’t convenient for me at the moment, only to find my favorite Caravan is screwed up too. I am done beta testing. Obviously my rebooting problem is something system specific and simply bad luck somehow but looking at the other bugs that are introduced with the latest update I just don’t feel like flying anymore right now. I think I will take a break for a while.

Confirmed, no updates at all lately. Concerning the event log: I am 99.9% certain my problems have to do with the update not going well. My PC is fine, I can play all my other games without any problems. Somehow I got unlucky. I am not the first one who has encountered problems like this. But anyway, as I said I don’t feel like reinstalling >150 GB only to find out it either still won’t work or something else is broken. I’ll be back in a few weeks or months or whenever I feel like it. I am done with MSFS for now.
