So I have a great experience running MSFS, almost everything set to High/Ultra and it is running butter smooth on my PC, even with 4 monitors connected. CPU is maxing out at around 60% usage and GPU around 80%. (i7, 3080ti, 64gb ram etc. PC is not the issue)
But as soon as I connect my Oculus I have all these drivers in the background totally destroying my computer. VR Compositor is the worst of them, always maxing out at 99%, after this, the OVRServer is also a villain. See print screen (This was when the gameplay is paused)
I’ve been messing around with all kinds of settings in debug tool, changing Hz, bitrate, FOV, AWS disabled etc etc. And it is only when i turn down all graphic settings within MSFS i get decent result in the headset. The sad thing is, the graphic settings makes it look like an early version of MSFS X. The whole point of MSFS2020 is the beautiful scenery, and this is for whatever reason lost whenever i want to use the VR headset.
Where is actually the bottleneck here? Is it Steam? Would I get better result by using a stand alone version of MSFS?
I’m really tired of spending hours upon hours on settings just to make the game run in an acceptable way.
How can I enjoy the scenery in VR? Do i need to upgrade headset?
I recommend Virtual Desktop and its VDXR setting, which eliminates the need for SteamVR. It does require a $20 purchase of VD so please don’t hold me responsible if it doesn’t work for you. For me it fixed all performance issues I had with Quest 3.
I have a 4080 and buttery smooth play. As been said buy Virtual Desktop - it’s incredible.
Has different codecs to try depending on your system. The Virtual Desktop Discord is fantastic - they will hand hold you through the tweaking and you WILL get smooth VR play. Takes a bit but not too long!
Last night I tried the new VDXR setting in Virtual Desktop in MSFS, absolutely incredible especially flying amongst the clouds. Managed to configure for 120 fps solid, although I wasn’t in a built-up area - Norway I think.
Summary of my core settings, headset Quest 3.
MSFS - High-End, with grass and bushes also High, clouds Ultra.
OpenXR Toolkit - mainly disabled just oversampled to 3300 x 3500 approx.
VD Streamer - AV1 10-bit, VDXR Runtime.
VD - Godlike, ASW automatic, 120 Hz, 160 bitrate.
Computer - 13900K, RTX 4090, 32 GB RAM.
The image below is from a Quest Photo capture which is low resolution - is much better in the headset itself.
I do have my computer connected to a wall socket which is connected to my router at the other side of the apartment (its around 15 meters and 3 walls away from my “gaming room”).
Perhaps I would need a repeater or something, I guess the quest need to be kind of close to the router aswell?
