[MSFS2024] Cessna 408 SkyCourier

Fast idle, slow nose steering response, weak brakes. The real thing has all 3 of these. To taxi smoothly and safely you’re in fine a LOT. And for turns as well for the inside engine. Someone mentioned condition or ground idle- there is no ground idle for fuel condition, the upper range of the fuel levers is for extreme cold weather engine start. I’ve been told that this setting will shoot flames out of the exhaust during start. I haven’t been anywhere cold enough with the plane to use it myself.

Around 10,000ft we’re getting 206kts tas with 900lbs total fuel burn. I use 1000lbs for 1st hour fuel calculation.

Flying this in VR is no fun at all. The model is missing decent collision meshes (which are mandatory according to the SDK docs) which makes it impossible (for me, at least) to use any of the switches or buttons in the cockpit (using the mouse pointer) without closing one eye.

The model also uses a lot of tiny lights (e.g. button labels) which don’t render in a reliable way in VR, leading to lights turning on and off arbitrarily when moving or turning your head. On the other hand, the AP status lights don’t seem to be hooked up at all. [edit: correction, they are hooked up, but they’re very, very faint, they don’t seem to emit any light at all]

Who developed this? Asobo or Carenado? I doubt it was a 3rd party with a good reputation.

edit: Ah, Carenado. My impression is that they never cared about systems fidelity or “by the book” numbers. I guess they now also stopped caring about modelling.

Ofc it’s a carenado plane…

Probably not worth creating new bug report threads as they’re comparitively low priority, but I noticed the SkyCourier’s spinners become transparent when you’re inside of clouds:

The weather doesn’t seem to be properly clipped by the interior of the plane either, so you see clouds and rain inside the cockpit sometimes.

Someone at Carenado seems to need a little refresher on COLLISION MESHES AND OCCLUDERS. It’s a page from the official SDK tutorial “How to Make an Aircraft”. It addresses both my “can’t hit buttons” issue, as well as @SkipTalbot’s weather in the cockpit.

Behold, the extreme STOL capabilities of the Skycourier!

Got that plane in and out of a 200 ft strip with obstructions on both ends, making it one of the most capable short field aircraft in the sim right after Draco and the Norden. This is realistic, yes? lol

Maybe all the naysayers that were saying 2024 was going to be a game and not a sim were right, after all?

Who needs realism?

Well, Wiki suggests that the C408 requires just over 1,100m to take off, so unless you had a fairly significant headwind, I’d say there are real doubts over the realism.

There is absolutely no realism in 408. With full flaps and a bit of headwind (8-10kts) this thing takes off and lands like a harrier… Thinking about it now, maybe it’s time for the Skycourier on Mt Everest challenge?

While it’s great to discuss such issues here, it’s not going to get logged unless you submit a bug report in the Bug reporting section. Although, it’s possible somebody already reported it.
