[MSFS2024] Sim Update 8: Your Dream Feature?

My dream feature for SU7 would be to use the ATC in the sim and not destroy performance and cause stutters.

By the way, any news on when the next beta will be released?

Considering this sim is somewhat related to Microsoft I find it hard that, for those of us that use text boxes for such things as weather presets and adding fuel/pax/cargo, we can’t use standard Windows text features.

I can’t place the cursor in the middle of text to alter a letter or double-click a line of text to highlight a single word.

It would certainly speed things up to be able change the name of a weather preset by simply changing one or two characters instead of having to backspace to where the change needs to be made then retyping (with attendant miss-spellings requiring further backspacing!) the text that should have been kept but had to be deleted.

That they bring 512/512 resolution back from the 256/256 for some reason they cut back a few Sim Updates ago. Flying VFR low and slow it is so noticable :frowning:
In a way its like buying an expensive brand shirt only to find out a few days later that the company have been in your drawer one night replacing it with a lesser quality one  Its very odd to me.

Are they at Gamescom 26 at the moment? Although @Zadma has pointed out there is Cu and an aircraft due out in Aug, their itinerary is a mystery to us all.

The team is in Cologne for Gamescom, correct. I think we’ll hear some announcements today, but they’ll be more high-level “gamer” content for Gamescom like a City Update/new aircraft - I wouldn’t expect to hear anything more technical like a beta, though hopefully we hear that kind of stuff in a Developer Q&A stream “soon.”

It would be hilarious if the response was to highlight the embrear business jet they were working on and got a huge wait time for responses, but this update is longer than most so I’m wondering what took them so long

Average time between the final release of one Sim Update and the start of the next Sim Update beta has been more than 21 days in MSFS 2024. So far it has been 13 days since the release of the last Sim Update, so by my math we’ve still another week until we’ve even hit the average length of time between SU release/beta.

  • Real dense clouds (not the ones where you can see trough)
  • Micro stutters when loading stuff
  • In VR, clickspots in walkaround reachable
  • In VR, choppy visuals when looking around at high altitude while frames are high

To be fair I was looking at the roadmap on the website, has not been updated yet

The roadmap has SU7 “planned” for two months from now.

Sounds like a big one. That or they haven’t updated the timeline. Could this SU7 fix the horrors of the original SU7? Unlikely but desirable.

Since SU6 released “on time” according to this, it feels like we’re more or less on track for SU7.

I know for ILR announcements that Boeing had their 797 announcement recently and the CRJ people updated the CRJ 200, do328eco, and the new do228 and the 737 Max 7 and max 10 got certified, but my best guess for top contenders are the new do228 in a Germany update or CRJ 200 with a new Canada update

Maybe the real Dream Feature is fixing the foundation

There are many good Dream Features being suggested here: ATC, weather, VR, liveries, turbulence, aircraft improvements and much more.

But I think there is a bigger issue we should be talking about.

Not every problem in MSFS 2024 is a feature request. Some problems are symptoms of something deeper.

The current voting system is useful for deciding what the community wants most. But it has a fundamental limitation:

Users can vote on what they see — not on what actually causes it.

Take performance as an example.

A user experiences stutters.

Another sees VRAM problems.

Someone else notices GPU utilisation dropping.

And another notices that opening or using the EFB can affect performance.

These may look like separate issues. They may also be connected to deeper systems such as memory management, streaming, loading, CPU/GPU communication or other parts of the simulator.

We don’t know.

And that’s the point.

We are the users, not the engineers who can see what is happening underneath the hood.

So if we simply vote on individual symptoms, we may end up fixing the same problem over and over again without ever addressing the root cause.

That can create a frustrating cycle:

symptom → workaround → fix → new side effect → another workaround → another fix.

Eventually the community becomes very good at diagnosing and avoiding problems that should ideally be solved at the source.

I don’t believe developers deliberately leave problems unresolved. But I do think the current development model raises an important question:

Are we giving enough priority to fundamental technical improvements that don’t look exciting, don’t make good marketing material and don’t necessarily generate new revenue — but could improve dozens of things at once?

Maybe we need something alongside the voting system.

Root Cause Priority

Not only:

“What feature do you want most?”

But also:

“Which underlying technical problems are causing the most other problems?”

For example:

  • Which systems generate the most recurring bugs?

  • Which problems are symptoms rather than root causes?

  • Which fixes repeatedly introduce new problems?

  • Which technical improvements could solve multiple issues at once?

  • What needs to be fixed before adding another layer of functionality?

That could change the way we look at updates.

Instead of constantly asking:

“What are we adding next?”

we should sometimes ask:

“What needs to be fixed underneath everything else first?”

Because adding more features to a complex system doesn’t automatically make the system better.

Sometimes the best update is the one users barely notice — because suddenly everything they already have simply works better.

So perhaps the real Dream Feature for MSFS 2024 is not another aircraft, another visual effect or another Marketplace feature.

Perhaps it is a stronger foundation.

A simulator where fixes stay fixed.

Where performance is predictable.

Where existing systems work together reliably.

And where users don’t have to reverse-engineer the simulator just to figure out why something isn’t working.

MSFS 2024 doesn’t only need to become bigger.

It needs to become stronger underneath.

Fix the foundation. Then build on it.

That, to me, would be a Dream Feature worth voting for.

Real air, please. I fly a PPL in the real world, and the thing the sim still doesn’t capture is that air is never nothing — even on a “calm” day there’s a little burble over the trees on short final, sink on the lee side of a hangar, a thermal popping you up 100 ft over a ploughed field in summer. MSFS air is either smooth or scripted-rough, with not much in between.

Same with visibility. A real UK summer day is often 8 km in haze — you’re legal, but you’re working to find the field. The sim’s air is nearly always gin-clear unless you dial in weather deliberately. Give me ordinary, imperfect air and the approach becomes a real judgement again, not a picture.

I think this is actually a great example of the point I was trying to make. “Real air” sounds like a feature request, but underneath it is a much deeper question: how is the simulator modelling the atmosphere itself? Adding more turbulence effects may not solve it if the underlying weather and airflow model is too simple.

A better foundation could improve many things at once: approaches, thermals, visibility, wind interaction and overall realism.

I think the mechanism for this may already be in place, but the application to individual aircraft is missing? I’m no expert but I’ve been flying the updated C750 from FFX and it’s the most “real” ride I’ve ever experienced. A few caveats though: I’m on PS5 so it’s hard to say whether other developers have already done this, and also I’m not sure to what extent the actual “air” is manipulated by FFX vs just applying already existing atmospheric model mechanics provided by the sim. But it would be interesting to understand, because we may be closer to this than it seems.

If Microsoft flight sim got Piedmont Loganair and SkyWest as their partners that would make the sim more interesting with the regional aircraft SkyWest Loganair and Piedmont’s history (that would make local legends more interesting also)

definently trying to fix the many many crashes (my game crashes atleast twice per day)
