MSFS2024 versus x-Plane

So you’re saying the terrain is “fake” for much of the world in XP 12 where custom scenery isn’t used? Custom scenery typically covers a small percentage of the entire world. However, I want to be able to go to any random location in the world and I want the plane to react to the contours of the ground, including objects placed on the ground procedurally - I don’t want to rely on custom scenery for it. I just ran a test on MSFS 2024 in the desert in a random location that I picked:

The small boulder (or large rock) has been placed on the ground procedurally by MSFS 2024. You can see the left wheel of the XCub react to the small boulder (large rock) placed on the ground. And I can go to any random location in the world, and the XCub will behave like this to objects placed procedurally on the ground, although it seems the object needs to be of a specific size before the object has an impact. Note that I picked a random desert in the world, I didn’t install some custom scenery for this test beforehand, I just looked for a random desert with rocks and tested it.

Not having procedurally generated terrain for the entire world is a big minus when it comes to ground physics. That in my books, is a big minus for XP 12 and a big plus for MSFS 2024, if MSFS 2024 has procedurally generated terrain with rocks and boulders, and XP 12 does not and relies on custom scenery for it (because I can pick any random part of the world in MSFS 2024 and I know the ground physics will be good because of the procedurally generated terrain across the world).

Well said! Fake bumps is a simplistic solution and I have to say, is a much inferior solution. As per my video above, the XCub’s left wheel is reacting to the small boulder placed on the ground and we can do this anywhere in the world in MSFS 2024 without having to use custom scenery.

I will gladly go with the more advanced solution that MSFS 2024 is using as my video above demonstrates.

X-plane 12 have better

-Runway and taxi lights at night
-Cars driving on the roads at night
-Replay tool
-Camera system
-upcoming real weather radar

MFS 2024 have better

-Default world scenery
-Clouds
-Water colors
-Default airliners are good (some bugs still)
-Seasons
-Weather

The lighting in MSFS is the winner for sure like the whole world engine vs the competition, but I agree , an option to tune the visual / atmospheric / rendering would be great.

For example the color saturation could be one aspect.

Certainly the Asobo Engine behind MSFS has powerful and similar features to the dynamic sky module I am using for my project (in UE) but making it available outside the Engine’s “Editor” (i.e in MSFS graphic settings) would require custom development I believe. But perhaps, and I am not sure at all, this tool might be possible to include in Dev Mode and presets saved for the sim. Just guessing…

Sorry but that is a load of bull with the release of 2024, as has been demonstrated above.

Well, I have both. It’s quite clear that MSFS 2024 was made with console players in mind: a screwed-up UX, a cloud platform. It would be better if there were two separate versions for console and PC because sooner or later, it will become quite obvious that you can’t keep both parties happy. We have console players and PC players, often hardcore simmers who have invested quite a lot. And knowing Asobo, they will end up dumbing everything down to make console players happy. Because well, that’s where the money is.

Meanwhile, X-Plane is a multiplatform sim that couldn’t care less about consoles and such. People here have been criticising X-Plane, but it’s been thriving.
And last but not least, I own a MAFS 2024 Aviator edition. For what? To test an early alpha release? I tried a couple of IFR flights; out of ~10, I was able to complete only one.

  1. once again, what on Earth does bad UX and Cloud support have to do with the game being on Xbox? From playing a bunch of PC and console games, I’d say the former have terrible user interfaces much more often than the latter. Mouses make UX a lot easier, even in MSFS itself;
  2. Face it. No Xbox, no MSFS, it’s just that simple. The often exalted PC “hardcore simmers” barely kept X-Plane and P3D alive -which is a harder thing than fostering great add-on makers- and they never would, or could single-handedly justify the $ splashed out by MS on FS 2020 (or 2024);
  3. I’m also very frustrated by 2024 and wish it wasn’t released in such a state. 2020 and X-Plane are very polished sims. I’d even say X-Plane is even more polished, especially considering it doesn’t have freaking Microsoft to fund it;

While both sims have plus and minuses, both xp12 (full release 2 years ago) and msfs 2024 (released 2 months ago) are still very much work in progress imho.

Currently, for VR, I’m mainly using xp11 and msfs 2020. Both of these work well and are very stable.

It sounded all like a fairytale when MSFS 2024 was introduced…How beautiful the intro videos were. Pulled you in, made you think
IT WAS GOING TO BE GLORIOUS!
We all saw what they had accomplished in MSFS 2020. The best of both worlds…a WHOLE NEW SIMULATOR…MSFS 2024.
And not only that, we’re going to bring everything from 2020 over and masterfully blend all into one MASTER SIM…THE BEST YOU’VE EVER SEEN!
**** MSFS 2024 ****
It turns out many promises were broken. There was no fairytale. Just an intro movie that grabbed your money.

There’s customer’s worried about broken career this and broken career that,
and 7 weeks into the SIM and you can’t even get a tail number on a plane?
Or even a pilot in those hollow 2020 planes that are half baked in a holding cell waiting to put the parts together.
*** There is no Fairytale…more like Fraud ***
Excuse after excuse…If Asobo said here it is, but we’re not making any promises, well then that’s on me. Asobo did not make any indication at all. All very hush and quiet. Then…
CRASHES ALL OVER THE WORLD…AFFECTED EVERYBODY.
FURIOUS…
Still now…
There is no real weather, there is no correct ATC, no tail numbers, a system to do control setups that a genius had to figure out…and then when you do. A separate setup for keyboard, and then the mouse, and then the controller. Unless you’re going to make a map of what plane you had to setup a special keyboard for and the other plane you’re just going to use the default keyboard.
IN REALITY, YOU END UP SETTING IN THIS SUPERIOR MSFS 2024…
A SEPARATE KEYBOARD, AND A SEPARATE MOUSE, AND A SEPARATE CONTOLLER FOR EACH PLANE!
MSFS 2020 was superior and not convoluted. I know I am rambling…excuse me for that, but I have more in my list…really doesn’t matter. Does it!

Depends on which version of X-Plane you’re referring to. Both 11 and 12 have been out longer than 2024 meaning that there aren’t as many bugs or issues that you will stumble upon. Graphics wise if you were to compare 2024 to XP12, I honestly think 2024 beats XP12. Right off the bat you don’t need add-ons in MSFS2024 to enhance the overall look of the sim (up to the user). It more so comes down to what you find more beneficial for you and for what you’re looking for.

Hope this helps!

Somebody did a comparison video of default XP 12 graphics to default MSFS 2024 graphics, so default to default, which is a fair comparison. Look at the comparison at the 8:03 mark in the video:

And there are other comparisons in that video (ie. the 7:06 mark). You can see that the islands and shorelines in XP 12 are still polygonal with hard edges.

It is definitely not perfect and still needs a lot of work. It is a workable alternative though to MSFS and long may that continue.

I suspect a few simmers were moved to try out XP 12 following the launch of FS 24. I was at least and I am splitting my flight sim time pretty equally now between that and FS 20.

I am enjoying flying the AFL Cessna 172 in XP 12. It is really good. It would be great if A2A could bring something similar to the MS sims.

Consoles require a simple, controller-friendly UI, whereas software like MSFS on a PC benefits from an interface similar to P3D or X-Plane. Even setting keybinds is a nightmare in MSFS.

Neither is perfect but at least we have competition.

What exactly is bull about what I wrote?

Tell me you have no idea what you’re talking about without telling me.
The Player count on Xbox is SIGNIFICANTLY lower than on PC. Nearly twice the users if you compare Win10 + Steam versus Xbox. So you should face reality instead maybe  No PC, no MSFS, it’s just that simple.

If you’ve been using real weather and you haven’t noticed that it does NOT depict what the actual weather is at that time, it wouldn’t really pertain to you.
Real weather is real weather…for me
Unless you’re in MSFS 2024

I didn’t say MSFS doesn’t need a PC version. I said it also needs to be on Xbox. In fact, there was no new Flight Simulator for more than a decade before, you guessed it, Xbox Series S/X, the very first MS consoles that could run a full fledged version of the sim, including add-ons. QED.

Oh ok I see what you’re saying now…and that is not the case for me at all. More often than not, 2024’s live weather is true to the METAR and what I see outside my window.
