MSFS24 from the EXPO

So I just finished watching the live Expo stream and you’ll all be so ecstatic that MSFS24 will be nothing short of amazing. I’m sincerely saying this. When you get a chance watch the video of the presentation by Jorg and Sebastian. All your worries will disappear after watching it. Then you’ll ask them to take your money immediately :joy:.

Much more performance enhancements, absolute beautiful details, keeping PC requirements to a minimum. And so much more!

I won’t say that I don’t share a specific level of excitement, but some criticism has to stay imho. Less data being saved locally means more data to be downloaded on the fly which servers must handle

So my personal suggestion would be to wait until it finally was released and first reviews were made before just purchasing. I’m sure Asobo did their best already and try their best to make the experience smooth, still the new limiting factor will be the internet connection quality if not the mainthread

All these announced changes are pretty interesting, so I’m looking forward while still enjoying the current sim

I get what you’re saying, but after today’s small presentation, I’m guessing the overwhelming majority of current sim users are going to move to 2024 within a week or two of it being released. The incentive to keep 2020 up and running will be low, so I think 2024 should be viewed as the next and only product. For reference, you can’t buy MFS, or MFS Game of the Year edition, only MFS 40th Anniversary Edition.

To be honest, it would be very difficult to support and maintain 2 different MSFS versions at the same time… Let’s see how MS/Asobo strategy for that.

Agree. I think it’s very doable for them, but once they see the dramatic decline in MFS2020 users, I’d suspect MFS2020 support will quickly turn into basically maintenance mode, then eventually deprecation.

all this does not tell me if the current material will follow

Is there a place to find this stream?

if you want an italian translation you can check it also here

In theory, yes.

However their point was that textures, DEM etc. are only really downloaded once really required. That is, if you’re actually flying in that particular region of the country.

I think they’ve also mentioned world updates, for one: currently such a world update downloads all textures of all POIs etc. onto your harddisk, means:

  • More data to download (and potentially update later on)
  • More space used on your local storage

Now the data (also level of detail (LOD) textures) is only downloaded once you actually fly there. So you might see a texture downloaded for some POI far away, but never its full resolution texture (unless you fly closer to to it).

Example: the France world update contains the Eiffel tower (and every other POI) and today those get stored (and downloaded) onto your local storage - but if you never fly to Paris this data is essentially wasting both download bandwidth and local disk storage.

That’s essentially how I understood it anyway. And this technique may also apply to other topics (other than world updates), e.g. in-game “stock models” etc.

stream can be found on their official channel …

Just remember, more data download means the faster you are going to hit your data limits if the ISP your connected to has them. Or your ISP may throttle the amount of data your downloading, so while its a good thing that more information will be kept in the cloud it can be a double edge sword as well. Not every ISP has unlimited data caps (thankfully mine does)

Yes, but the inclusion of AI should help with what is actually needed to be downloaded to your local sim…. Yes highspeed data connection will be important but the sim-trimming should also make a difference.

If you are wondering if existing add-ons will work in 2024, they have said several times now that yes it will be compatible and you will not have to re-purchase your items from 2020. Its also in the FAQ about 2024.

If thats not what you meant I apologize.

Smaller install download with more streaming data as you fly seems to be the beneficial for casual simmers who may have passed up trying the sim due to the large install footprint. This meshes with Microsoft’s goal to bring flight sim to more users. For full-time simmers, hopefully there will be good caching where we can configure how much data we would like to retain.

You actually have it backwards. One reason they are going this route, is the current way of doing things is causing some issues for people with capped downloads, or throttling of data streaming. The new way in 2024 should in theory, reduce downloads, by eliminating data calls for stuff that won’t be used in the immediate area, and stuff that is cached initially will be lower resolution, hence less data.

One thing that has been “worrying” me is why they’re going to actively maintain 2 different platforms/sims. I just don’t see how this is feasible, especially since we all know it takes months (if not more) to fix some core bugs.

Probably in the same way console generations still get supported once a new one comes out. No new features but game breaking bugs will be dealt with. Moreover, “support” could mean anything such as the servers won’t be switched off to stream data. I should imagine, once 2024 is released, the dev team for 2020 will be cut down to a smaller team with the rest going to 2024.

Who knows… if everything we’re seeing and hearing is as we hope it is, I’m not sure why anyone would stay on 2020 for too long.

They have been showing the dev roadmap for MSFS 2020, so we know they have stuff in the pipeline. But you can expect that new enhancements will be made on the 2024 platform and it will gradually improve while 2020 stays the same.

When Jorg was talking about the seasons feature, he mentioned that a big part of it was the new 3D tree assets that will only be in 2024. He thought it may be possible to backport this to the 2020, 2D billboard trees, but did not make that a commitment. But if they did add that to 2020, imagine how many people will complain it doesn’t look as good as it does in 2024! You can’t win sometimes.

I personally think that once 2024 arrives, the overwhelming majority of users will migrate to 2024. Once Microsoft sees the 2020 numbers dwindle so quickly, I’m guessing MFS2020 will very quickly be put into “maintenance mode,” and like @KnightofNi312 said, only sim breaking fixes will be applied.
