My 3080 upgrade decision for Pico 4 VR (spoiler 4070 Super)

I was thinking about upgrading my 3080 for a good while. I was on an email list to be notified when the TUF gaming 4080 Super came out (my pre built PC uses TUF components and I just like that the parts are from the same brand). I got the email saying I could order it. It did not however specifiy that that exact card had to be specially ordered (but hey, I could just pay more and get the OC version because that was in stock). Two weeks later it had still not arrived, and I was looking at YT GPU test videos.

The 4070 Super was, in tests, just about on par with the 3090.

I was on the whole fairly happy with the graphics from my 3080, so I was not looking for a card that could do everything on Ultra, just a little better than my 3080 so I could bring some of the settings up from medium to high, and from off to medium. Smooth is more important than graphics fidelity.

Got the 4070 Super. Cost 220 dollars less than the 4080 Super, but is still 930 dollars here in Norway. So about twice what a used Playstation 5 with two controllers is selling for, just for one of the lower spec’ed GPUs from nvidia.

I run an i9 14900KF. Cost: 30% more than a used Playstation 5 with two controllers.

Total cost of just the upgrades to my PC, which I these days pretty much only run MSFS on, is three Playstation fives with 6 wireless controllers, three remotes and three headsets  It is madness.

That being said.

Bumped VD streaming up from high to Ultra.

Kept all the PC settings really low (I only ever switch to 2D if I have to leave the game to do something around the house while flying between waypoints) so it doesn’t have to look great.

It runs really well. Looks great. Flies smooth.

And the problems that are still present would still be there even with a 4090 for more than twice the price. They are either related to networking, the Ethernet to USB-C NIC I use with the Pico, or to the game architecture as a whole which is not exactly optimized for VR in the first place.
