My C:\ keeps growing after install of FS2020

I have all my data for FS2020 on my D:\ (1 TB) as my C:\ is smaller at 200GB. For some reason my C:\ drive keeps filling up. I’ve went from 50GB usage to 100GB usage. Why is FS2020 filling up my C:? There’s no other apps on this computer.

Could be your pagefile that’s filling the drive… change it to a fixed size (not windows managed)

You can also create a symbolic link to a folder on your larger drive. In You Tube, there are some good tutorials on creating symbolic links to files and folders for Windows 10.

What this basically does is all the folders are the same on drive C but the actual data lives on the larger drive and as you increase the capacity it works on C drive but places the files on the larger drive. This also protects your C (system) drive from filling up, which would crash your computer.

You probably need to determine which folder is growing, so you can determine what folder needs the link and needs to live on the other drive.

I’ve now created a number of symbolic links on my system to support things like:

  1. Orbx Scenery: I link the data to an SSD for fast access on a large drive and this also reduces the growth on the partition created for the sim as my Orbx scenery grows.

  2. Drive C only Apps: Some apps will only install on drive C, with no option to install elsewhere. Using a symbolic link allows the installations to be made on C but effectively places the data where you want it.

Hope this helps in the management of you data across your drives.

I am happy to be corrected on this but if the reason for your ‘C’ drive filling up is windows pagefile then I believe that you can also change the pagefile location to another drive, e.g. your larger 1 TB drive, ‘D’.

Another reason could also be that the MSFS 2020 rolling cache, if you are using it, is also using drive ‘C’. I believe that you can also change the location of this too or just deactivate the rolling cache option.

I think it is the rolling cache that is growing as you visit more areas. I noticed mine is growing as I explore the world.

Well you can tell it a drive to install to but in honestly it distributes files all over your operating system. Most games do that now and it drives me nuts. Like you I used to have a 250gb nvme just for my OS, a 500 gig SSD for games and programs and a 2 tb mechanical drive for media and stuff. No matter where I was installing the games they just kept sending stuff to my C: drive. Mostly the apps data folders.

This game will put stuff in your apps folders, the folder/drive you tell it to install to and to folder in your c:/programs files that is hidden and locked unless you fool around with folder and file permissions. Windows Apps folder I think its called.

I would guess the same as Lemit4001, its your cache folder and other things growing as you play more. But the default setting for that is 8gb so it shouldn’t be growing any larger than that.

If understand how the page file system works that will constantly be changing because it determines it on the fly by default. And I have never had it really effect the reading for my drive size. I mean I am sure it does but what I mean is I haven’t checked it one day and had 100 gb availabe and the next day it be 70 gb or something crazy. There are TONS of articles and videos on how the paging system works though if you want to fall down that rabbit hole.

I don’t think so. Rolling Cache and Manual Cache are fixed in size.

And you are 100% sure that when you installed MFS you told the installer to intstall it on D: ?
I did this and it only created links on my C drive.

Yes, rolling cache is what you defined it, I have 32GB and it reserves it immediately, it’s not growing with time and places you visit.

It is certainly a memory dump created by the program: check your EVENT VIEWER…

Thanks everyone for the feedback.
