My experience with Pimax Crystal

I’ve been waiting for something better for 8 years now.

@all: thanks for the info about leaving the headset plugged in while playing - I thought that wasn’t possible and the batteries had to be used. I started wondering whether one could simoly 3D-print something that looks like the battery but is just a cable connector.

Hp g2 now is fine, with dlss improved a lot, it can be even better like in other games but this platform isn’t made for VR, HP is working not at full potential, the fov is even better and the details increased since 1 and half year i have modified the facial mount by my self not buying anything, anyway spend so much money just for trying isn’t a smart thought, most of us cannot do that, anyway my suspicious of course for the bad feedback and so many used crystals sold by Amazon, and in amazon the price now has a discount of 500 euro, that makes me understand that they are having so much problems with clients and they’re losing a lot of money with the refunds, cause that they’re dropping the price down.

Of course I’m curious to try it, if i can really say “wow”, most of g2 users didn’t modified their headset but i did so I’m not sure if i would say wow, the lenses I’m sure are better pancakes are another world.

Anyway let’s see perhaps if it drops a little bit more i would try this follies.

Isn’t the G2 about to be discontinued? It used to be my favorite pick, but I don’t want to buy a dying horse.

The argument about price drops to reduce the amount of refunds doesn’t make sense. I doubt peoole go “oh, it doesn’t work, but I only paid 1600 Euro, so it’s okay”. I feel it’s an effort to either grab all the christmas money, or, since it seems to be valid only until today, one last-ditch effort to get better 2023 sales/revenue numbers. Especially when the thing was sold for 1700 Euros elsewhere anyway. So they’re rather selling for about the same price they sell it to the retailers, it seems.

Battery must be used it is required by Qualcomm chip driving the Crystal. But it is being constantly charged during the VR session.
If you go with one cable and Pimax hub - you should expect 4+ hour session. Then you can go out of VR in MSFS, swap the battery and go back to VR again for another 4+ hours. The first battery will be in the charger then, getting ready for another swap. This is what I use, as I never fly longer than 4h.
The other option - you connect additional long USB C cable to side USB C port of the Crystal - this will provide enough power prevent any battery discharge and you will have unlimited session duration.

My G2 was also modified with custom 3D printed face gasket, which brought my eyes closer to the display, increased a bit the tiny sweet spot and FoV, which made G2 acceptable to me (then).
The first time I donned Crystal, after 10 seconds, I knew I will never use G2 again. Huge sweet spot, much bigger FoV, brightness, contrast, color vibrance, crispness, resolution.

Crystal is much more expensive, requires powerful PC, but compared to G2 it is from another league. For some people with bigger budgets the price/performance will be right for Crystal (high end setup). Some other simmers will probably go for Quest 3 with moderate PC (below 4090).

If Pimax is lovering the price (probably responding to Varjo Aero price drop) we can be only happy as the customers benefiting from the competition. Given the fact that you can now buy the Dmas headphones (highly recommended) separately, Crystal price drop is not so massive. The cheapest version is without controllers, nice option for people using the VR only for simming.

Crystal is using glass aspheric lenses, not pancake (like Quest 3) nor fresnel plastic lenses (like G2).

Hi,
When I was a flight instructor IRL, I flew with student pilots who were prone to air sickness. To overcome that, I told them to let me know immediately when they would start to feel unwell. We always flew next to a small uncontrolled airfield and landed immediately. Slowly we were able to increase the time between takeoff and the onset of their airsickness more and more. They all became commercial pilots .
In a VR scenario you might try the same. Fly a bit and when you get uncomfortable, stop immediately and take a break. Rinse and repeat.

I had an instructor friend who said “yeah, I once had a student like you, but after about eight hours she was fine”. That’s where I got the idea from after all. A big “thank you” for telling me an actual method to follow, instead of just an idea.

So I have a 4090 (7800X3D) and considering the Crystal. The USD price this a.m is $1350. And it looks like it comes with everything. If I’m a dummie, do you think I can get the setup enough to get my monies worth ??

Well your rig is certainly capable of running the Crystal well. As for setting it up, if you run into any issues or are unsure what to do, just ask on the Pimax Crystal settings thread and people we will help you out.

Since you seem to be in the US I’d suggest buying a Crystal through Amazon, which will give you a quick return policy if there are any faults with your sample.
