My opinion as an airline pilot and simmer

Farhad:
I believe most folks would agree with the released state of the sim. I think we were are fooled by the pre-release hoopla. However, it is already showing many signs of becoming a great sim. The amount of addons is already amazing, and the “feeling” you get from the scenery makes this seem so real. I’ve had some flights that just were amazing.
Stay with it, it’s just a matter of time.

Thank you, captain. Right words for a wonderful FS

Yes, I like what topic starter said.
On some note that many people are complaining about MSFS being really a public beta and not ready etc. Yes, it is not completly ready, I agree. And I often get a bit angry about glitches and my unsatified expectations. But I just not getting why some people are so agressive about it and continue to bitterly complain. Just give it a time. Even though Asobo is not a small studio and has Microsoft’s backup, it cannot magically and instantlly make perfect sim. Would you rather spent another 6 month waiting them to polish it up, while reading the news and peaking at screenshots published by alpha/beta testers. I would rather enjoy flying simple planes, try to work around some glitches and observe how sim is maturing and evolving. None of the flight simulator were perfect when they were just released. Both Xplane and FSX were literally unplayable on average computer past medium settings, and bugs and glitches were countless. So, if you cannot stand the sim in current state, just give it some time, I am sure it will be here for long, play other games while waiting. I myself quite enjoying the experience MSFS is providing even in this early state.

even a smallest bug or a temporary disadvantage(before some addons and improvement) in this simulator looks like a universal disaster, because the game generally, for lack of a better word, is perfect… this calling - contrast, so i don’t only understand any frustration about this, i’m the confusion, when see bad looking clouds, strange trees, glitches with builtrees/treeldings, shadow 3d generation, lighters without pillars, lack of structure models with concrete buildings instead gas terminals, chemical tubes, temples, etc., switch some in cockpit in free view and ctd after all

Ha, yes! Minecraft has nothing to worry about.

I’ve been away from real flying for about a decade and FS for longer. I was so excited to hear of this release I bought the latest and greatest PC and the premium version on release date - for all its faults I am thoroughly enjoying simming my way through some flights that bring back fond memories.

For all my fanboying and praise I give this thing I do understand why some are dissapointed. There are glitches, bugs and things that are not finished or right in the game. You simply can’t argue that fact. For someone that loves to fly intrument flights in airliners this thing is probably a big let down. I just think some, not all mind you, are a bit over critical at times. But welcome to the internet lol.

I have to wonder how many of us really thought this thing was going to be perfect out of the box on release though? I certainly didn’t. Especially not from microsoft lol. I am honestly elated it was only 60 bucks and it wasn’t a monthy payment thing. I mean I am glad that in the world we currently live in there are people that still have the optimism that something will be what they expect on release day. I certainly don’t have that kind of optism anymore. I expected it to be so much worse honestly. Then again for the things I do it seems to work perfectly fine. And I didn’t have any trouble downloading or installing it, or running it.

To be honest I was never that happy with Xplane. It just didn’t do much for me for whatever reason. The first time I got it I actually returned it for a refund. Then I got it again a year later and sat down and actually gave it a chance. I will say in its defense though at this time you don’t have to spend a lot of money on it to make it looks nice and have fun. Thanks to some great people there are ton of mods you can get for free that work very well. Some better than the paid stuff! It does take a fair amount of time tinkering around though. But that is just kind of how it has always been with flight sims.

For those that are not happy with MSFS and want to go back to Xplane I say more power to you. Do what makes you happy. If you have a sim you have tons of money and time invested into and it does what you want it to why wouldn’t you use it?

smejsan999: Do you work for Microsoft by any chance, sounds to me like your trying to sell the game for them.

Nobody should be comparing X-Plane or FSX releases. That’s not what the issue is. Every software release has bugs, nobody is disagreeing with that.

Yes. I would’ve rather it not been ‘released’ for another few months. I say that in the context of, this still needs an early access or beta stamp on it. I’m glad its out, but its not a ‘v1’ release.

The number of issues, that were previously reported by alpha/beta testers, that were apparently not corrected is large. Things like live weather, general aircraft issues (turboprop engine behaviour, a lot of missing G1000 features to name a couple) etc.

The problem I have personally, is that no matter how I try and enjoy this sim, there’s always something to bring it down. Visually, its great, but theres much more to a simulator than looking out the window at terrain. I do really hope that the next update fixes a lot of the significant issues, but they just shouldn’t have been there in a non-beta, ‘v1’ release for a flight sim

I have increased this “rolling cache file” or whatever it’s called from a single digit size to 30GB. Now it’s stunning.

regarding the DL speed it COULD be a hot router, your provider, your antivirus, etc.

Thank you Neilblurt! I totally agree. To the others thanking the OP…Who cares if a “real airline pilot” (assuming we can believe everyone that says they are…I have my doubts…) enjoy the sim or if it’s better than what they trained with? We didn’t buy those sims…we bought a Microsoft Flight Simulator that was NOT advertised as being released as beta. In addition, as an MSFS it should, without debate, have been at least as “complete” and functional as the last release of an MSFS flight sim a decade or more ago. But, except for the visuals, we went backwards! Can you tell me that the planes handle better, or the navigation systems work better, or the ATC, etc. etc? No excuse for the state it was released in.

Yes, of course it will be a great sim when it is fixed. Who can argue with that? It is already awesome in many respects. But stop telling me (us) that it is ok (you even said “the best decision” )that it was released in such an unfinished state!

Here here. Bottom line from a personal perspective is i paid for a sim, but so far have been delivered a nice looking, bug ridden game.

I did not sign up to spend countless hours trawling forums for tips on how to improve FPS enough to make it playable or trying to understand why my peripherals aren’t working (they work flawlessly with ED, X-plane, FSX)

And Windows and Xbox online support are probably as sick of hearing from me as I am of contacting them. I have no doubt it will improve with time and agree it has huge potential but at this point, I have put far more hours in the weeds trying to sort out basic performance issues (which I am neither experienced/ qualified to do nor take any pleasure in doing) than I’ve spent “in the air.”

Thank you for your comments guys, I can see that most of us share de same excitement about this FS.

To all of you guys who are unsatisfied, as I said before, I understand perfectly why you are and you are right. As a paying costumer you have the right to demand the product you buy works fine, even if it does not satisfy your expectations. I agree, it is a frustrating, I don’t try to change your mind and I understand if you feel ripped off. You have the right to feel that way but most of us are really enjoying our experience and if you ask me why, I would tell you that it is because we know that all these issues will be fix and we will have a beautiful FS. We are seeing technology never seen before: volumetric clouds, Azure, photorealistic cities, live air traffic, incredible visual quality, etc. I know that some of these functions are not working properly but they will.

I think we well see the real potencial of flight dynamics when we have the payware study level airplanes. You guys who have been in flight simming for a while know that default airplanes (excepting a few small airplanes) are mostly garbage.

I don’t pretend to defend ASOBO or MS, I am just sharing what makes me excited because I see the POTENCIAL of this sim. I prefer a thousand times this buggy FS that in a few months will be polish than wait 2-3 years for a better release version that also would have to be polish.

Chill out, be happy, if MSFS makes you angry go back to your old sim and come back in a few months. If you are enjoying it, good for you, it will get better.

We all don’t have to agree, I can understand your disappointing but since I see that most of this issues are fixable, I feel excited.

Cheers.

@Roadspider
As I’ve said they gave the world travelers a unique experience to enjoy and crow about and left the simmers (now being called whiners) in the boonies. Hope they level up the playing field quickly. After several months of bug reporting, that’s inexcusable and their obligation to fix.

I agree with the positive outlook and the great potential you stress, and all you talked about in your post about the future of fs2029, building upon the new technology we now have in it. I look forward to it very much.

But I have to respectfully disagree with the paragraph I have quoted here.
When fs9 or fsx was released, the planes certainly weren’t as visually detailed or comprehensive as the later freeware and payware 3rd party addons, but they were not garbage either.
They flew accurately enough. Those sims did not get released with a majority of aircraft not being able to utilize nav systems or get accurate atc instructions.
They did not nose dive after pausing or react weirdly to trim. You had the option of buying the really accurate addon planes but you didn’t have to in order to use basic ifr functions or have glitch-free vfr control.
Even with the old 2d panels (with many excellent ones created by users), you could easily grasp a switch or button and position the cursor to change hdg or alt values .

So I cant argue with the hopefully bright future and I’m thankful for the sim but it should not have been released with these issues… not without warning the buyers.

Alpha/beta/release - these are just names of software development phases. Does it matter in which state the sim is right now? Yes, there was a bit of a false advertisement, I agree to that. But hey, everybody who follows the news of development could see there will be an issues. No way it could be finished bug-free project of this scale going from alpha to release in what, a month? There is some politics involved in getting them release early, but that’s not the point. It’s not likely, considering the scale of the project, that the team will abandon the sim in bugged state, grab the money and disappear.

People sound like there is a person with a whip standing behind them and force them to play the sim. If you get frustrated by playing sim now, do not use it. That’s simple. What is the point of making angry comments (not bug reports which help development, but just angry)?

I was actually applying for alpha preview of a sim. Never got the invite, but now at least I can enjoy it, even with all the issues (again, I am not like all-forgiving angel, there are things which get me mad). If you’re not, just wait it out.

So I shouldn’t be frustrated that the simulator is missing key flight simulation features, or just not use the simulator I paid for?

If it had an alpha/beta tag, I’d understand. But when I can’t even get live winds (a problem that was apparently noted during alpha) for a full release flight simulator, I have every right to be frustrated.

Hmmm. You can get frustrated all you want. I am also at times. I just don’t see points of angry comments and 100,000 topics about people complaining. Again, not constructively discussing bugs and problems, which is useful for feedback to developers, but just expressing unsatisfaction. The sim is not subscription based, it does not have expiration date and it’s not like story-driven game, which you play one time and get over with. Most issues will be fixed and your money will not be spent in vane. Flight sims have long life span.

P.S. No winds here either. Cheers!

Exactly.
All the points about alpa/beta… timelines…we don’t don’t have to play it now if we don’t want…
All true but they avoid the fact that it should have been sold as that. Not Angry Words, and I did report bugs. The more we let things slide like that without strong complaints the more we deserve to get incomplete products and less truth in advertising.
