So I am in dire need of a new graphics card. I currently use a 5 year old Geforce GTX 970 with an Intel core I7-6700. Graphics are decent, but very unstable(I get FPS drops and stutters), I can only have low-medium buildings without many other settings =.
What do I want? I am not a 4k player or a VR player, and my monitors are Acer XF251Q. My 970 can barely do 15 with many drops and stutters even at places without too many buildings, so a graphics card that can at least let me enjoy medium buildings with a higher terrain data setting would be nice.
I would prefer sticking with nvidia. I have looked at a GTX 1660, and I am willing to stretch to the RTX 2060, however I cannot afford a 2080. I just don’t know too much about GPUs. Yes, there are websites that give me comparisons on cards, but these can get overwhelming. Perhaps there might be an AMD Graphics card that someone can suggest? Just something that can do better than my current GPU.
I mainly fly Airliners like FlyByWire’s A320, and will be flying aircraft from PMDG and aerosoft in the future, and will sporadically play turboprop planes.
Also, my next graphics card has to have the capability to connect up to 3/4 monitors.
Hi,
sorry this won’t help you, but now is not a good time to buy graphics cards as they are in short supply and incredibly overpriced at the moment. If you are looking for an RTX 30 card (of any type) avoid the reasonably priced ones on eBay & similar sites.. as many are scams, although the scammers usually list the 3080 & 3090 cards.
One other thing.. if you do manage to get hold of one, you might want to make sure you’re PSU is up to it too. These often get overlooked.
Good luck
Unfortunately I can’t afford a 30-series graphics card, so I don’t have to worry about them being stocked. Thanks for the tip about the Power supply.
A 2070 Super will hold up great today and you might be able to find one for a good price. I run one of those which I bought last year cheap.
You still will have stutters in the A32NX and such because a lot of issues are on the sim side and need to be developed further by Asobo, but it’ll blow your 970 out of the water. At 1080p high, GA aircraft are pretty much always at 60FPS, the A32NX can be a bit stuttery and drop down to 25-30 in the heavier airports but thats not a limitation of the GPU.
Worth noting my CPU is a Ryzen 5 3600 and I have 32GB RAM.
Right now is probably the worst time to buy a graphics card. Everything is insanely overpriced.
Here’s a suggestion - your CPU is 6 years old now. Instead of buying a GPU, you may get a LOT more bang for your buck by buying a new CPU/Motherboard.
You can get a new Intel CPU + board + RAM for ~$450 which will be a huge upgrade (and if your current board has DDR-4 RAM you may be able to save $100). You’ll see a big improvement in FPS even with your 970, and can buy a GPU later this year when prices come down.
Edit: I used Intel as an example since you’re on Intel and they are more easily available right now. AMD is a also a great choice. Can’t really go wrong with either.
Considering your outdated CPU, I’d suggest you look for a pre-built system with all components on a more recent level.
Those are sometimes not much more expensive than the graphics card alone since system builders can get the cards for better prices. 1660 super and the 2060 are quite common in midrange builds.
It’s just an idea, but considering that the sim is very CPU and RAM bottlenecked for many of us, spending the money on a GPU alone won’t make you happy, I think.
I bought a 2080 used in February, it was still pretty expensive but given the fact that I could sell my old RX 570 to a great price as well, the price difference wasn’t as bad and totally worth it. But I was already on a current-gen CPU at that time, so that wasn’t as much of a bottleneck and the GPU upgrade was balanced with the existing hardware.
Not sure what your old card is still worth on the used market.
Before you buy anything, make sure your Envy (whatever this exactly is) is able to be upgraded. Is this a PC inside a monitor? If yes, you could have a hard time to fit a normal sized GPU in there, maybe it uses a Laptop-GPU. Also look at the powersupply. Usually prebuilts run on the absolute minimum to get the Hardware to run and will not be able to power an upgraded GPU. Also it could be hard to fit a standard-sized GPU in there. Do you have an exact model of the Envy you are talking about?
Well, replacing cpu and motherboard often means to replace your RAM, maybe the power supply as well (especially if you’re planning for a new GPU anyway).
This is why I’d suggest to look for a prebuilt system or maybe a used system which is well balanced.
Sticking a 2070s into your machine won’t bring you a lot for MSFS.
Yes. Much better to upgrade the rest of the PC and buy a GPU when prices return to earth later this year or possibly early next year.
Everything you’re seeing on eBay is WAY overpriced. The MSRP on Nvidia 30-series cards is
3060 - 329
3070 - 500
3080 - 700
Unless you’re getting a 2000-series card for less than the comparable 3000 series card, it’s overpriced. And good luck trying to get a decently priced 2000-series card. People are selling 1080s for $500 or more.
What’s your budget? Given that you have an HP, upgrading the CPU/Motherboard may be too much trouble. That case looks a bit small and if you dont’ have much experience putting together a computer, it might be too hard to do.
You might consider selling your system (keep the GPU) and upgrading to a prebuilt without a GPU and drop the 970 into that.
Okey. So you would need a new Motherboard, CPU, GPU and maybe even a PowerSupply as this one only has 300 or 500w, depending on your configuration, which will not power a strong GPU and CPU.
Also the RAM in this builds are very weak, so it would make sense to switch them aswell to match the standard of your upgraded hardware.
As said, space in this HP cases is very small, check the size of the GPU, chances are, it will not fit in there without cutting some stuff out of the case.
Honestly, at this point, you can buy a complete new System…
On the other side, you could just keep the i7-6700K and the motherboard. The CPU is not that bad. But keep in mind it could bottleneck your new GPU a little bit. I upgraded my i7-6700k to a i7-9700k when MSFS came out and it was worth it.
Of course those who suggest you to change the entire PC with a new one are not wrong, but if you cannot afford a single RTX 2080 you cannot afford a new PC with a decent GPU either.
As for the two GPUs you are looking at, I would pick the RTX 2060 because DLSS is in Asobo’s plans and when it’s implemented it will give you an advantage over the old GTX and similar AMD cards.
Getting an XBox Series X might be a very good alternative in these times of stupidly priced PC Hardware. I think we’ll get some more details on the XBox version this sunday.
For those suggesting I get an Xbox Series X(It does sound kind of intriguing), I currently have Thrustmaster Airbus Sidestick and throttle quadrant. I also own the Logitech/Saitek pro flight yoke. Will these be compatible with the Xbox?
No confirmation yet, but we should know a lot more very soon. Possibly this week. They are supposed to announce a lot of details though the ongoing E3 conference
There’s the key. That was before the worldwide silicon shortage. Despite them being last gen entry-level cards, you’ll be lucky to find one of those these days even used for less than double its MSRP at launch.
I sold my old GTX 1070 about a year and a half ago to a friend for $300 (CDN, about 200US) - right before this whole shortage started. Nowadays, 1070s are on the used market for $700 CDN minimum. I only paid $650 CDN for mine brand new when I got it. And that’s a 2 generation old GPU.
I had a 1660ti coupled with 3770k overclocked ivybridge which was ok at 1080p, ran it for 6 months from go live then upgraded to 2nd hand 1080ti due to vr upgrade
Similar to what a few have said getting hold of gpu at fair price is a bit challenging at moment.
1660ti and 2060 both in same ballpark performance wise
