I have a friend who’s into flying helicopters and I’ve been trying to help him map the controls correctly.
One thing we were not able to figure out is how to assign the correct command in MSFS to the handle on the collective where you adjust the RPM as I understand it. My friend has a controller with both a realistic cyclic and collective.
Anyone in here know what would be the right command in MSFS to assign?
theres a helo specific bind, collective throttle i think its called
On youtube , there is a video from SimHanger about Heli flying, that helped me a lot.
Scott
I believe we already tried that one but it didn’t seem to do anything.
Will have a second look next time I pay my friend a visit.
Thanks, we watched that one and also found it very useful. Unfortunately, he didn’t mention what I’m asking for in here.
Are you trying to map the HYPE H145 by any chance ?
i used it, and quickly regretted it. my collective has a twist grip and wasnt happy with how it worked with the different helos
works fine in DCS, kinda wonky in msfs
It depends on what helo you are trying to configure.
It should be the COLLECTIVE THROTTLE commands/axis. But turbine helos typically don’t have a throttle as the fuel supply is managed automatically by FADEC or the FCU
So it’s really only for piston engine helos (eg Cabri G2, Robinson R44). These may also may have governors to control fuel flow.
The Robinson R44 freeware helo does have a throttle with governor. You do need to use the throttle manually at first on engine start until the governor takes over. After that you can effectively ignore the throttle as the governor does all the hard work of maintaining rotor RPM. I found the only way to operate the throttle was with my mouse in the virtual cockpit. None of the throttle commands worked, either via MSFS or via 3rd party drivers like SPAD.next.
I’ve not tried with the Cabri G2, but this wouldn’t be the first important control not to work properly in the sim (eg prop feather commands are still non-functional)

Many thanks for the advice given!
I should mention, personally, I know absolutely nothing about helicopters. Just trying to help my old friend who is a former helicopter pilot make sure he can enjoy flying helicopters in MSFS.
As I recall it, his controller is called ProSim something. It’s a proper setup with both the cyclic and the collective with the collective throttle handle. The same kind of throttle you’ll find on a motorcycle. This is what we’ve been trying to find the correct command for in MSFS and we’ve been using the default Bell 407 model in MSFS.
Based on what you say, maybe modern Bell 407 helicopters don’t have the collective throttle. Which of course would explain why we haven’t been able to assign a command to it.
Oh well, at least by following the control setup tutorial by SimHanger Flight Simulation, we managed to assign the commands for everything else. Meaning my friend can fly which was the main goal.
Thanks again for your help guys!

I have the pro sim trainer collective (not the rest of the kit tho). It does the job, but I don’t recommend binding the throttle axis on it
The collect axis does not currently work in-sim for turbine helicopters unfortunately. Seems to be taking a very long for this to be fixed…
Ok, sounds like what we setup so far is as good as it gets currently in MSFS.
Good to know.

It is a bit frustrating, but we’ve come a long way.
It does make it a bit harder to practice autos, because you have to use the mouse to rotate the throttle in the virtual cockpit, but it’s doable…
It sort of works with the Cabri G2, but there is still a conflict where the throttle axis and governor fight each other if you have this axis assigned and the governor on.
It works pretty well in the Nemeth S300CBi that came out recently. You can assign the throttle and control it, then engage the governor and the governor will override your throttle axis unless you dump it to idle.
edit: like already mentioned though, those are both reciprocating(piston) engine helis. The axis control for the throttle doesn’t work on the default B407. It works on some of the 3rd party helicopters like the Cowansim products if you use the mouse.

I think it works with the bell47
a little note : be sure heli assist menu are set the best way suitable for you (default : all heli assist are ON thought, it may be misleading when setting your controls )
