I’ve ordered a new CPU 5800X3D to replace my 3700X as I fancied an upgrade. I know it’s still running on AM4, but in all honesty I did want to spend loads and by what I’ve read, the 5800X3D will be a decent upgrade from my CPU.
Now I fancy treating myself to a new GPU (currently got a 5700XT red devil) but I’m really not sure what to upgrade too (apart from a 4090 as that’s overkill for me and too expensive). I mainly only play MSFS and Iracing on my PC and have no interest in VR. I game at 1440p so what GPUs should I be looking at which will increase the performance of MSFS?
AMD 6800xt or 6900xt GPU. More VRAM,cheaper even brand new compared to Nvidia and better overhead in DX12.
I switched to AMD from Nvidia RTX a month ago and my experience with MSFS has been nothing but amazing despite the bugs in SU11. Rx6800 running most settings on Ultra 3440x1440. Fps varies. 70+fps in less intensive areas.
If you decide to switch to Nvidia you may find some good deals on the used market. eBay (Reddit r/hardwareswap)
Someone on hardwareswap sold their 3090 for 750USD.
More VRAM on the 6800/6900, but slower GDDR6 and lower memory bus compared to the Nvidia 3080+ competition. I’m not saying this makes a significant difference in performance, but comparing VRAM capacity like this is apples and oranges.
I’d wait and see what your 5800X3D upgrade does for you. I recently updated to this myself and achieved a substantial boost in MSFS performance, nearly double the frame rate in some scenarios.
Oh, and don’t forget to update your motherboard BIOS to the latest one that supports the 5800X3D.
I agree. See what the new CPU does before spending more. I run a AMD 3800X with a 5700XT and get great performance with most settings on high and a few on ultra. However, I only have a small monitor at 1080 so I don’t demand a lot of the system. I get good frame rates and graphics. Not enough desk space for expansion.
Faster memory does not necessarily yield better performance in this game. The 3080 may pull ahead in 4k but more vram and a faster CPU are the most important things for a smooth running sim. Extra ram as well.
If you think faster vram is more important then try bumping your settings all the way up on your 3080 at a higher resolution. It is going to stutter like crazy.Neither the 3080 or 3080ti does well in DX12. What happens when the games supports more features like RT? You’ll need more vram. Look at the 4080. That monster has 16gb vram. Maybe Nvidia is learning from Amd after all
With NVidia, the 3080ti probably gives you the best value for money at the moment. It’s as fast as a 3090 and normally is significantly less costly because it has less memory.
You already said the most important part here. I don’t negate the point you’re making, but VRAM is only a part of the equation and can easily be controlled by graphical settings.
You will be mostly VRAM limited if you bump up all the settings to max as you propose - even with 16 GB, you will run into overrun issues at higher resolutions and terrain LOD. In this respect, the 3090 or 4090 with 24 GB of VRAM would be more suitable.
A good secondhand 3080TI from ebay with buyer protection would be a great matchup foir your new cpu. I’ve had my Gigabyte Eagle 12gb model for a good while now and am delighted with it’s performance. I only have the standard 5800X so you’ve got me beat there (lol) but the 3080ti is a monster performer and you should be able to grab a bargain as people hit the 40 series cards which I think are vastly overpriced and sure, I’d like one, but with almost maxed out lod sliders and 79fps the sim looks fantastic.
I paid msrp for my card, but by looking around I’m sure bargains are out there now. Happy shopping!
RTX 3070 used beween 300 and 400$ or RTX 3080 used between 500$ and 600$. The new GPUs from both nVidia and AMD are insanely overpriced, as well as the 3000 series new (which, at those fantasy prices they demand, unsurprisingly is still very high in stock).
Well I couldn’t wait, money was burning a hole in my pocket so placed an order for a new GPU yesterday.
I ended up getting a 7900XT which has just been delivered to me. Yes I know I could have got 7900XTX for a little more, but I would have had to also buy a new PSU and also a case as they are just too big!!
If you don’t play in VR I would definitely recommend a Nvidia 40xx card since the frame generation of DLSS3 is kinda made for MSFS… fantastic technology!
If you do play in VR, a used 3090 is a great choice for MSFS.
I just recently switched from a 3090 to a 4090 and while I do see an improvement, a 3090 gets you most of the way there since you will be limited by the CPU most of the time.
Im running a 5800x3d with a 3080ti and im very happy with the performance. If you’re going to go the route of a 3090 i would say save yourself a little bit on money and get the 3080ti. Very similar performance.
I’m just starting to research building a rig for MSFS (currently on Xbox)
I highly recommend checking out BuildPicker on Youtube, look for his video from last summer about MSFS, he goes through CPU, GPU and RAM testing to show what resources are needed.
For anyone interested, both the new NVIDIA 4090 and AMD 7000 GPUs have had trouble. The NVIDIA 4090 comes with a terrible cable that had cheap solder joints inside leading to melting - luckily a simple fix is to use a better cable. Breaking news yesterday that the new AMD 7000 GPUs may have a design flaw…
