@TenPatrol I have done the exact settings and changes to community folder and testing you recommended, frames are locked at 80 and staying 75-80, Power usage on the GPU went up signifcantly to about 220-240w, from 150-200w, no stuttering at either test location (EGLL / YHMB).
I recommended locking FPS to 72, but you chose a different value. That’s fine, but keep in mind that every change affects the recommendations and the test results.
In any case, I’m glad the stuttering is gone ![]()
You now have a good baseline configuration for your BIOS, Windows and MSFS 2020. Don’t make any more changes to the BIOS. The only thing you can check is how your fan curves are configured.
Don’t enable Rolling Cache. It has been causing problems in MSFS 2020 for a long time.
Don’t use New York as your MSFS 2020 test location. It’s currently one of the worst places for testing.
Don’t go overboard with FSLTL traffic, as it requires a powerful system. You can certainly use FSLTL, just don’t set it to maximum.
Also, don’t use multiplayer together with FSLTL. Use one or the other.
And remember, if you choose a large airport and configure FSLTL and MSFS traffic incorrectly, there will be too many aircraft. That will cause stuttering even on a system with an RTX 5090, so don’t overdo the traffic settings.
After you’ve tested MSFS 2020 over the weekend, you can update your NVIDIA driver. You already know how to uninstall and reinstall it using DDU.
I couldn’t disagree with this more. I did a video on the visual differences between TAA and DLSS, and granted it was in 2024 and not 2020, but DLSS was miles better. You lose so much detail with TAA compared to DLSS. You can see one meaningless number better, and for that you sacrifice a lot of fine detail in the scenery. You can’t even see light poles a few hundred yards away with TAA, whereas with DLSS they are there in fine detail. With TAA the horizon is blank; with DLSS you can see objects that are miles away.
To each their own but DLSS is definitely not a “last resort”.

I recommended testing with TAA because that’s what I’ve been recommending for a long time when troubleshooting. There will always be time to try other settings later.
In this thread, the priority is to stabilize the BIOS, Windows and MSFS 2020, not to debate whether TAA or DLSS is better.

The best approach is for users to test things on their own systems, because every PC configuration is different and what works best can vary from one system to another.
OP have you checked to make sure your NVME drive has the latest firmware? I haven’t read through every single post so sorry if you mentioned it. I did a search for your NVME and stuttering in games and I found a lot of different sites talking about stuttering and slowness with that drive.
It looks like the OP has confirmed that the stuttering is gone with the baseline settings and without any programs that affect MSFS performance running in the background.
In any case, what you mentioned is a very good suggestion
In theory, the NVMe drive should already have the latest firmware because this is a prebuilt PC. They should have updated the firmware if a newer version was available.
If it turns out that the NVMe drive does not have the latest firmware, it can be updated if necessary.
I’ve checked all the drivers, and also have unlimited lifetime support with DS via a real person and a phone number, I talked to someone yesterday for 40 minutes and they explained that the BIOS was set the way it was because I did not specify it to be optimized for anything in particular and did not pay extra for that, so they optimized what they would do for a base system. They also checked all the drivers for AMD, BIOS, NVME, etc., everything is up to date.
The fan curves are set well, and given how low the temps sit I do not feel i need to play with them. The rig has not gone above 70C while playing MSFS once, and the fans stay below 50% most of hte time and quiet, so I am happy.
I did some testing with my old community folder after this optimization, no stuttering, but yes FSLTL does take a hit to the FPS. I guess there is some fine tuning to do w/ the number of aircraft. Since I only care about aircraft on the ground I usually turn it off when I takeoff and am at cruise.

Would agree for testing it is useful, I can now turn on DLSS if I want and see, honestly, I do not need ultra FPS, just did not want the extreme stuttering I was getting.
If I did use DLSS, what is the best mode to use it on? Quality, Performance, Balanced, Auto, etc., they all look the same to me. Ill take a look at that thread.

DLSS has the different “Modes” which specify the render scale - to save processing power and fit within a lower hardware budget, it can render a frame at a lower resolution, then upscale it back to the screen resolution.

TAA also has a render scale option you can set in MSFS
@flyer7773 I’d like to suggest there is a much simpler solution. A lot of simmers are overly focussed on FPS. But really, the human eye does not benefit from higher and higher FPS. Anything above 40 is of little use. Stutters however, are painfully obvious.
It’s an easy trade - reduce FPS, get less stutters. I’m on a high end system, limited to 30 FPS and I have ZERO stutters. There a several very good articles on this.

I don’t agree with that. If someone has a monitor with a refresh rate starting at 48 Hz, for example, then capping FPS at 30 would actually make the experience worse, with visible stuttering.
Also, there’s no need for magic tricks like a 30 FPS cap + 2x FG. They aren’t necessary and can even have a negative impact on the overall experience and smoothness in MSFS.
It does help dynamically change settings to maintain FPS and performance, useful in heavy scenery loading areas.

I deviated from @TenPatrol settings base now that things are non-stuttery and better performing, and put it to DLSS Quality, and that looks great and is still performing great so will keep for now.

I agree 100%. I used to (in FSX days) be thrilled if I actually hit 40FPS!
35-40 with zero stutters makes for a great, smooth MSFS. I use Lossless Scaling in FS2020 (since FSR is not supported) with a 1440 Xand set my AMD to a 45FPS limit. No complaints or stutters in 3440 X1440 resolution with a 9070XT GPU. The quest for FPS of 60 - 100 or higher is not worth the effort, at least in my case.

A bit of a quirky problem I am in that maybe you have some answer to.
I run a lot of adobe products and was noticing that Lightroom, etc., were performing really badly with the game-ready nvidia drivers.
So I decided to test the studio drivers, which made LR work much better, and did not impact MSFS that I noticed.
Except, i cannot run MSFS without running it in DX12, which uses much more VRAM than I like, and is not necessary, IMO.
If I turn it to DX11, the Sim crashes when I load it, I get a Graphics Card error msg.
So I said ok, let me try going back to the Game Ready Drivers. I ran DDU uninstall, clean, restart, reinstalled the game ready drivers, went into MSFS, same problem. the Sim only runs if in DX12.
Now its not a huge issue but it certainly has performance impacts especially when in NYC - the very things you helped me solve.
No idea how to get it to let me run DX11.
I checked, DX11 is installed on the machine.

you forgot to mention which NVIDIA driver version you’re using. The exact driver version is important.
Also, how do you have your graphics settings configured? For example:
- Is DLSS enabled or disabled in MSFS?
- Is DLSS enabled or disabled in the NVIDIA app/driver profile?
- Are you using any other driver overrides or custom NVIDIA profile settings?
