I just upgraded my rig to an i9-9900k + RTX 3080 + 32GB RAM + Aorus z390 Pro Wifi mobo.
I am honestly thrilled with the performance now as compared to my old i5-6600k + 1070 + 16GB setup. Now running 4K Ultra with photogrammetry and pretty much max settings (except for render scaling at 80) and now I’m locked at 30 FPS for 95% of my flying.
My question is about overclocking. I have zero experience with it. What’s a reasonable performance bump expectation if I OC my chip to 5mhz? Is it generally worth the trade off in heat generation and potential instability?
Tom’s Hardware has benchmarks of stock vs 5.1 GHz Intel CPUs in their Ryzen 5900X/5950X review, though they are 10th gen.
In their tests, at 1440p Ultra, they gained about 4.2 fps on the 10900K and 6.4 fps on the 10700K (which may be a better point of comparison for you).
Though since you play at 4K you will be a bit more GPU limited than they were. So in short, there’s not a whole lot to gain really.
The short answer is no, i’m afraid.
The 9900K is - from the factory - already close to it’s thermal limits.
The small []arguably unnoticeable] gains to be had from overclockiing are, imo not worth it.
I have the 9900k and 2060super. The CPU runs around 4.6 Ghz and the GPU is running 50 Mhz over normal. I get 50 FPS most places and down to 30 FPS in the high density area. Everything Ultra in MSFS. I do not let GeForce Experience set my settings. 1080p for the monitor which is a 42" TV, and 2 27 inch monitors for other things
