Hi guys. My new pimax crystal finally arrived yesterday but I’ve been plagued with CTD very shortly after starting the sim. I’m using Pimax XR and the Open XR toolkit. I’m getting the following error.
Which Nvidia driver are you using, there were a couple of drivers a little while back that causes this issue. The latest driver 536.67 seems good. I personally use NVCleanInstall to install only the driver and none of the GeForce Experience stuff.
I find it’s also worth deleting your shader cache if you start seeing graphics issues.
Thank you for replying. I’m on the latest Nvidia driver and don’t install the geforce experience stuff either. Do you know where the shader cache is located?
Hi there, use Windows Disk Cleanup - make sure DirectX Shader Cache box is checked. Then restart your system in safe mode, type run in your search bar and copy and paste this:
I was receiving similar message from MSFS ca. 2 months ago with Reverb G2. It comes from MSFS not directly from Pimax or nVidia stack. Asobo reported that they corrected oversensitivity of this behavior/message.
I resolved the issue on 4070Ti by removing any overclock from the GPU.
Did you check the link to which the error code is pointing?
I checked the link and it points to a driver issue possibly corruption which can lead to the overheating but thework around was to install a much older driver dating back from March. I’m going to try and use DDU to uninstall my drivers and re-install the 2nd newest driver. My card only has the stock (very small) overclock but maybe I’ll try rolling that back too. Thanks alot for the tips guys!
With 5800x3D, 4080, & G2 - I quickly get same CTD with DX12 and HAGS on. DX12 with HAGS off doesn’t crash. DX11 with HAGS on or off doesn’t crash. May or may not apply to others with the 5800X3D.
I found this quote from another forum member and had copied it in to my “settings to try” notes:
Quote:
The Graphic Device Error has been plaguing me since my new ITX build 5800X3D 4090 32GB Ram and complete win11 reinstall, clean MSFS 2020 and only portal for HP Reverb G2 and Tools for WMR set to 200% and 1/2. DX12 constant CTD with and without Error notice of Graphic Device. Switching to DX11 it was totally stable. No Errors. Added toolkit and use it for MR 45fps and Mask, FFR Quality Wide. RTSS is set at 45 on MSFS exe profile. Not on global. I’m on 531.29 Nvidia driver. Good to go.
My Brother on 7900X3D, same 4090, 32GB Ram, Reverb G2 VR, was on DX12, toolkit for MR 45-30fps Mask off, FFR Quality wide, sunglasses light, tools for WMR 200-400%, RTSS 45FPS on MSFS.exe, 531.29 Nvidia driver and he’s totally stable. He switched to DX11 and immediately got the Graphic Device Error and CTD.
We both have HAGS on and Gamebar ON. 7900X3D requires DX12 for gamebar and core assigment. My 5800X3D doesn’t use any of that. So strange that DX 11 vs DX12 depending on the CPU can have such an impact.
I tried a clean install of drivers and still have the same issue. It seems to crash quicker when using TAA mode. The thing was I came from a G2 and never had this issue in the past when using DX11 with the 4080 for the last 6 months. I’ve been monitoring the temperatures of the card with afterburner and its going up into the 80s (degrees celcius) which way too high but the fans arent going asnywhere near full speed which strange. I’m going to try manual fan control and see if that sorts it but it’s unusual its not happening automatically.
Sorry for a small off-topic, as this post will not help much in resolving the crash issues of the original poster.
But it may help with clarifying why Open composite is not required for MSFS and Pimax headsets.
As explained by @mbucchia there is no need to use Open composite for native OpenXR application like MSFS (the post is about WMR headsets, but applicable to Crystal as well):
In case of MSFS and Crystal the only tool you need to switch between OpenXR runtime and SteamVR is:
As explained by Mathieu OpenComposite is only needed for non-OpenXR applications if you don’t want to use SteamVR for them: PimaxXR is ready to use out-of-the-box for OpenXR applications. For OpenVR applications, you may use [OpenComposite]
The issue has been resolved guys. As soon as I turned off HAGS I had no further issues and everything is working great. Strange how I had zero issues with HAGS with the G2 and had noticed a boost in performance. Still sticking to DX11 for the time being. Thank you so much to everyone who gave suggestions. Finally I can enjoy this wonderful headset!
