New Player looking for some guidance and info

Hi i recently went from VR Driving Sims to Purchasing this game last week.

I have a decent rig (upgrading GFX card when in Stock)

I7 10700k
32GB Ram DDR 4
GTX 2070 Super
3 TB M.2 SSD
12 TB External Hard Drive.

Valve Index VR headset.
Next Level Motion Simulator V3

As i am new i have just been learning the in game tutorials and messing about in flights im starting to really enjoy the game already at a very basic rate. I have a few questions though and if you have time to reply id appreciate feedback.

1.Where or Who is the best place to watch videos regarding going from Basic to Intermediate/Advanced? I would like to understand proper Navigation setup, advanced start up procedures and setting up for landing? For instance when i’m approaching a runway i have no clue at what the altitude should be or speed from a distance,(lol i seem to sometimes come down like a Stuka because i see everything to late and crash) eg,if im flying into LAX what altitude should i be from say a few miles out?

2.I have a motion Simulator for my Racing Sims, the feeling in flight though adds so much immersion. Is there Turbulence in the game that gets really bad that i can feel it? I’ve yet to experience anything other than take off and landing.

3.I see that there are missions in the game and look to enjoy these in the few weeks once i have my Yoke delivered ,but do scenarios play out in Real World flight? Like random events that may cause the plane to act uncontrollable and you have to react and work on these problems in flight? eg,Flying from London to Tenerife, flights going good then all of a sudden issues in mid flight? Are these generated or are they just down to basic human error in game by messing with something in flight.

4.Add ons…I see from many videos there are far better Exterior Graphics packs, from Plane Skins to Ground control Movement and Weather Packs…Everything looks amazing and very realistic, where is the best place to purchase add on packs and find out what’s the best to have installed.

5.I currently have ordered the Honeycomb Yoke and its due in this week, i’m running the Saitek 56 and like the throttle controls (didn’t like the joystick feel for this game ) ,so i’m looking into Rudder Pedals can you suggest some good Pedals?

Thank you for any info.

I believe you would benefit much more from using the in-game tutorials for basic flights—taxiing, takeoff and landings, etc. than watching YouTube video instruction . Although you can become oriented by watching instruction, I’m sure by now you have found that getting a feel of the simulator is also vital. Check out some of the basic flying instruction built into the sim.

I use the next level racing V3 motion platform and can verify that turbulence is modelled, just enough to make you aware of it when the wind is 20kts or more.

thank you will do more then,i just thought maybe a certain youtuber would go into it in more detail.

Hi, nice to know.

Can i ask what your V3 Settings are in game? Or are they just default?

  1. There are loads of YouTube videos, but I recommend starting by reading this book - Microsoft Flight Simulator for Pilots (Amazon.com)

Yes, it was written for FSX but all the content still works. It teaches basic flying, navigation, and all the rest. It’s great to be able to refer to a book and then watch videos, because many of the videos assume a basic knowledge of flying (they’ll say things like “Set the heading bug” and you’ll be wonder what on earth the heading bug is).

  1. Yes, you can enable random failure modes. Depending on the plane you’re flying, these can be highly detailed to very simple. The more expensive planes like the PMDG DC-6 or Aerosoft CRJ model failures very accurately, and even the free FlyByWire mod for the default A320 does a great job.

  2. One of the best parts of MSFS is that you do NOT need a lot of expensive addons to enjoy the game. Lots of free addons are at https://flightsim.to. There are a few addons worth buying, but if I were you, I would enjoy the default planes/scenery and free addons for a few months and only then buy stuff - once you know what you want.

Also for Youtube:

320SimPilot and P Gatcomb are two good ones.

Thank You will look into that.

For buying addons - in game Marketplace is the only place, right now, that will be carried over to XBox ( if you care about that ) other developers might add support but it’s tbd. The downside of the marketplace is there’s about a week turn around for patches / updates after the developer uploads them, until they’re available.

Marketplace and Simmarket have a lot of stuff - both planes and sceneries, but buyer beware - there’s far more lousy/mediocre addons than good ones. Lots of “developers” are trying to cash grab off new players.

Orbx does a better job curating partner content and has a very solid app for buying and managing content. Their airports and landmarks are generally high quality.

Aerosoft and JustFlight have their company stores and sell partner products as well.

Don’t go turbo on addons until you figure out what you really need, and will actually use. The texture improvement packs are fine - but still generic… a good scenery for a specific airport will always be better. There’s no magic one-stop fix. The weather addons don’t improve the look but change the type of data injected into the sim. They can have more accurate data for a specific airport - but it won’t be accurate for the whole flight - and the built-in weather systems will show different weather from a distance. Check other threads for better info on this.

like you said - check reviews and Y/T videos of airports and airplanes. some of the popular airport developers are pretty average, IMO ( sloppy modeling, using default ground textures, etc ) so look into what you’re getting…

I would recommend MFG Crosswind pedals. Best set I ever had.

I’ve reduced the pitch travel, increased gear and tarmac effects and icreased the initial roll effect, but reduced it’s travel. I’ve got a buttkicker attached for engine vibrations.

@RobertDeHero1 Squirrel does a very clear set of tutorials from setup to in-flight.
You might flnd his videos useful. Here is a link to the tutorial playlist
