Keep the speed up. Land above 95mph. Yes, The P-40 will drop like a rock with the gear deployed and some flap. Give it more throttle. It’s ok to land a bit fast.
On go around… leave the gear down and just give it throttle… do raise the flaps though. It should stay airborne
As others have said, once on the ground raise the flaps and pull back on the stick. That should plant the tail wheel pretty good. I think this is in contrast to what the manual says. But I find it gives more control. and slows you down faster.
For my technique, I don’t use hardly any rudder at all once touch down. I use differential braking to keep it on the runway. Once below 60 or so you can use rudder and both brakes.
I’m assuming you have rudder pedals with tow brakes. You are a brave man if you are flying tail draggers without those.
I really should’ve pointed out I’m Xbox and yes I’m using controller. I guess that makes it way more suicidal than having a full on sim rig. Which is also why a slight buff should get applied to console version. I’m not expecting it to land by itself but certainly a tweak to be more accessible within reason. I can land the Extra somewhat decent, I also recently bought the Carenado Cessna 170 and Waco YMF, both I really adore so far, so it can be done on controller at least with some planes perhaps.
It’s interesting you point out that you hit the ground so fast, I can see there’s something to that, it’s counter-intuitive but there’s no way to float it down slowly because it just falls out of the sky once you hit let’s say 100kts Airspeed. It struggles to cruise at anything less than 150-160kts, needs to go about 30-40 above that to actually feel good. This definitely wants to go fast and climb hard.
Oh ok…a controller… then I’m impressed you’ve gotten as far as you have actually. I just don’t have the skill for that. I need several advantages I guess. It does make sense that you find the Extra more manageable. I find most of the Asobo planes to be a bit anemic… but maybe the Extra is that smooth in real life too. I don’t know.
Actually, i never used anything else than a 360 gamepad since the launch of MSFS. And i would argue its easier with it, than with many of the more fancy stuff.
I’ve had it for months now, fly it regularly and haven’t encountered any breaks, this has miraculously breezed through the updates unscathed somehow. You’re good to go grab it if you want a legitimately challenging plane to master.
hi, now that the Goose is out, and by the way nice job BR…maybe the P-40 could receive a little love ? or doesn’t it need it anymore ? it’s always a hard one to master in take-off/landings…
I feel that it’s just fine - the aircraft is NOT a walk in the park as is usually the case with high torque taildragger warbirds from that era. But it CAN be tamed if you practice technique.
oh, don’t misunderstand me…i love this plane, especially because he’s one to master…love this feeling when i suceed in taking off in straight line
But a lot of time passed since the last update, and we had at least two sim updates, especially the last one with a rework of propellers simulation. i’m sure the P-40 could be even better ? adding engine management, a tablet or whatever…
I sure hope so. Every plane should get the upgrade I reckon in order to keep up with the flight dynamics Asobo is moving towards. I flew this for the first in ages last night and still love it but…always a but. I felt it was outdated somehow already. This could go a soft remaster of sorts as some point for sure. I’d like to see it stay relevant.
I can’t for some reason interact with the mageneto so I’d like that fixed. The RAAF livery could go some tidy up as there’s a couple blotches of paint that could go removing. Just a couple examples how things could always be improved.
Maybe I should send a message out to the dev and see if they’re willing to look over this again soon. I’m sure a break away from the Grumman Goose might be good for em.
Okay so I have seen a lot about take off and landing with the p-40 and some of it was negative bla bla bla the plane sucks but I have a solution I’m posting here and then to the other forums as I have yet to see any real how to outside of the BR manual which many people say is bs and it’s all “bad flight modeling”.
I have seen this plane fly in person many times, sat in the cockpit sadly never in the air. BUT my experience with my eyes and what I experience in game and what I have read in the ACTUAL FLIGHT MANUAL all match up
