New Release: Carenado Cessna C170B

This has been discussed a lot in the posts above. I know it’s a pain to scour through over 500 posts, but you might try doing a search so as to not make this any longer than it already is.

Just a friendly suggestion.

I have only ever been able to avoid a bounce with a three-point full-stall landing.

I have seen videos of real life 170’s making wheel landings smoothly but I can’t do it in the sim. Good three-point landings are rewarding, though.

So it’s not just me, I’ve been bouncing around on landing this plane a lot!

New v1.3 patch is out. GPS is now readable on startup and buttons are not clipped off screen.

However, I’m finding the map corner data values disappear sometimes, and can’t be configured when they disappear. They also all default to all show bearing on start.

Anyone else noticing this?

I rarely get any bounce in YMF5, maybe one out of 30 landings when i approach too fast and not smooth. Got used to 3 pointers and that completely eliminated bouncing.

A couple small bounces aren’t going to hurt a bush plane anyway, they’re designed to handle a rough landing or two. The tundra tires in particular are basically balloons, of course bounces are going to occur. The Waco on the other hand, bad bedfellows for sure. The angle of attack must be much lower, slower and flatter with taildraggers especially in this sims concerned. Any aggressive steep angle stuff will have you crushing them into the ground, they don’t like it one bit. Babying is definitely necessary.

I stand corrected on the YMF5. To be honest it has been a while since I flew it, so I just took her on a quick circuit around NPS, Hawaii and managed to touch down ever so gently without bounce on that nice grassy field.
Thanks for pointing this out!

Ok I flew the 170 today for the first time and the engine sounds were messed up. While flying it would sound like the engine dropped a few hundred rpm then it would race back up and keep doing this every minute or so. Then after landing and shutting down the engine after the prop stopped the engine sounds kept going another 10-20 seconds. Is there a fix for this?

Just picked this up myself. For $15 this is an awesome deal. Lovely airplane. Great ground handling, sounds, and visuals.

I too am struggling with wheel landings. 3 pointers, no problem. But it bounces with every wheel landing. I’ll keep trying different techniques. I struggle with them in other sims too so not sure if it’s a sim problem or a me problem.

Try to further reduce your speed before touchdown. If you hear the stall warning just prior to touchdown, your speed is correct.
And one hot tipp: Give VR a try! Flying (and especially landing) in the sim is much more realistic and much easier in VR.

That’s really too bad…

I actually bought this Carenado 170 after watching your videos.

Hopefully, they tweak it.

Also, make sure your nose is not the least bit pointing down, which may be difficult to tell, especially as you are trying to look over the nose. As noted above, you need to make sure you are approaching touchdown as flat a trajectory as possible (which is much easier in 3 point mode). This is much easier in real life as you have better peripheral vision.

Your attitude (which governs your approach vector) matters more than your speed in this landing situation.

Try various amounts of tail down as you approach the runway through your flare, IOW, start in 3 point attitude, then practice lifting the tail ever so slightly with each landing until you find the sweet spot you’re looking for.

I’d also add, don’t be in a hurry to put her on the ground either. Let her fly down and settle.

I’m finding this has been the biggest contributor to my ever increasing number of bounce-free landings.

Yeah, I am too quick to touch down.I am also not used to heavy nose and have tipped her a couple of times. Getting better though.

I think that after folks figure out how to properly land this bird on a consistent basis,
they’ll have mastered landing ANY other “tail-draggers”!

This C170B is what we used to classify way back in my control-line flying days, as being “very touchy”!

Am I the only one having sound issues with this plane?

Can you be a little more specific?
I’ve always kind of liked the engine sounds that Carenado developed for this one and haven’t really noticed any particular issues with it, except perhaps it might be a little too loud compared to others.

The engine will sound like the RPM are going up and down in speed during a flight and yet I look at the tach and it is not changing and it is a big change in sound. Then after landing and shutting down the engine the engine sound continued on for a few seconds after the prop had completely stopped.

I was really bothered by this for a long time, but since the latest update I have not noticed it.

Yep. You’re not alone in those observations, some of which have been discussed previously here.
I was just flying from Heathrow to London City a few minutes ago and noticed the same sound fluctuation inside the cockpit, but outside it seems to be much steadier.

Edit:
I just completed the flight and have to say that the sound inside the cockpit does seem improved, though, since the latest sim update. AND I landed it with just ONE bounce! I am going to take credit for that!!!
