New Release: dc-designs-pt17-stearman

I confirm, you are !
Seriously, what do you find for an issue with the compass ?
Mine works perfectly well in flight.
The issue I found since the beginning (but it doesn’t disturb me at all) is with the VSI. It indicates the climb rate divided by two. e.g. for a climb rate of 1000fts/min it shows 500fts/min.
But as I use the Stearman for aerobatics, flying under/through structures and slalom between obstacles, the only iinfos I really need are RPM and speed.
Others are with eyes and butt.

No problems with compass here either, works normally.

The compass is correct when pointing due N,S, E or W. At all other headings it’s off by varying amounts up to 17 degrees or so. If you don’t believe me, try taxiing on the ground so that your heading reads 330 in external view. Then switch to cockpit view and take a look at the whiskey compass.

The reason it matters to me, and I accept I’m in a tiny minority, is that this is the sort of plane I like to do cross country VFR in with map, compass and the Mark I Human Eyeball. Much like the sort of pilotage described by Steve Coontz in Cannibal Queen. With the compass as it is, it’s useless for dead reckoning.

A whiskey compass has a great deal of natural variation in real life, not to mention the local magvar of the area you’re flying in. Aircraft often have a compass variation card to cover such things. Not sure how far MSFS goes in terms of magvar but if your airplane is settled, wings level and trimmed, it will record the correct magnetic heading.

I very much enjoy VFR flight myself so I know where you’re coming from, kudos for making the effort to learn to do so!

You have to take in account magnetic declination, if the compass has been recently and well compensated or not and the real imprecision of a whiskey compass.
IRL, even a small metallic object can modify it’s reading.
Navigating only with chrono, map and whiskey compass was a pain in the (comp)a.s.
And risky, particularly with altered visibility.
It’s why gyro compass was created.

Yes, I know about magnetic variation. Every other plane in my hanger shows the correct magnetic heading, so magvar is clearly not an MSFS feature. Are you saying you deliberately modelled it this way? It doesn’t matter whether the plane is in flight or on the ground, the problem persists.

As I said, I submitted a detailed bug report months ago to Just Flight support, who agreed with me this was a problem and said they would be passing on the info to you. I assume you never got that email?

The whiskey compass uses the stock MSFS XML code for its animation, so it’s working based only on the sim’s internal code. It’s possible that there is something else going on, but I haven’t noticed anything myself. I will make a note to test it when I get a chance. I don’t recall JF mentioning this but I get a huge amount of correspondence every day so I might have missed it.

Thank you Dean, I appreciate it.

Just solved it. It’s correctly animated, but at the 90 degree intervals, so four animation points. In between those four points, MSFS is for some reason allowing minor errors to slip in terms of absolute position - so at 220 degrees, it’s actually pointing 217 degrees and so on. The closer its animation gets to the cardinal points, the more accurate it becomes, hence why I didn’t notice the issue.

Easy solved - more animation points to tie the animation down to the correct positions. Noted for the next update.

Fantastic! Thank you so much, it’s been driving me nuts

It’s refreshing to see a developer corresponding with customers like this, and coming to a resolution. :slightly_smiling_face:

I just bought the Stearman and have spent the last hour flying from one of my local airports which is Lydd in South East England. I flew in VR with my Reverb G2. My god
this airplane is sooo much fun to fly. I did loops all the way through my own smoke trails, barrel rolls etc. amazing feeling plane. Dean, my wife flew one of these planes from Headcorn (well strapped on top of to be more accurate) during a wing walking experience. I know you will have a busy agenda but would be amazing if you could add an option to carry a wing walker on top. Thanks for your amazing plane. Literally the most fun this afternoon that I have had in the sim so far.

I’ve had a few folks ask about that. I might try to at some point, tougher to do as it might require what are called “bone” animations to make the character realistic. For now though, it’s time to focus on my other projects ready for the end of this year. I’ll return to the Stearman as soon as I can :+1:

Again, great plane with a relaxation factor just cruising above the landscape.

Hope you are going to tackle another classic aircraft in the future!

Does there exist a flightplan resembling the flight of the Cannibal Queen?

Yeah it’s pretty nice. A dev like carenado? “Thank you for your ticket, we are looking into this.”
marks as solved and no updates for like 6 months

Fired up the new version (with the fairings) and took it for a little spin around Philadelphia. A fantastic plane is now even more fantastic. Great job, Dean! The only problem I had was outrunning my smoke trail. Any way to make it thicker/more visible and last longer? (Does that depend on atmospheric conditions at all?)

It can’t be too long as the effects degrade sim performance the longer they are visible. That said, I haven’t experimented all that much with it yet so it may get longer in the future, or at the least denser.

I hade one of these rare WOW moments when I flicked the switch and smoke came from the engine exhaust, visible from the cockpit :star_struck:

I bought it on Marketplace and have a problem.
After loading the aircraft on an airfield , most switches dont work.
(Standard livery).
Only after a complete Marketplace uninstall and new install it’s ok.
I have no interest in un/installing this plane every time to fly this plane.
I have seen others with this same issue, but no solution.
Marketplace is still on version 1.0.2
Very annoying
