New to VR (G2)

I’m super new to VR. After 20 years with flight simming I got my first headset. Downloaded Open XR and running at 70% render scale and 100% in sim. I found everything out of focus and blurry. Almost impossible to read fmc and objects more the 20 meters away are completely washed out. My VR settings are mostly set to high and GPU usage is fine ( around 80%). I tried to play eith the IPD but no luck. Is there anything I can try or this is just what VR is these days? Also. How to I make the toolbar pop up? I don’t have the controllers and in the VR settings there is no way I can assign a button on the toolbar popup command ( i can only see a question mark but to way to interact)
Thanks

Your system specs are very similar to mine and I my G2 is crystal clear. One thing that takes a little getting used to, is the ‘sweet spot’. Only the very centre of your vision will be completely clear and if you look off centre, by moving your EYES only, it will seem blurry. This ‘sweet spot’ can be optimised by setting you pupil gap correctly and changing the distance between the headset and your head. Different thickness padding is available for this, but I find that pushing the headset fully against my face, when I first put it on, seats it back as far as I need.

It may also seem counterintuitive, but despite the headset’s screens being right next to your eye, you will actually be using distance vision (focal length is apparent around 2 to 3 metres). So, any vision correction you need for distance viewing will need to be used in the headset (though custom made prescription lenses, specifically for the G2, can be bought quite cheaply).

Ok. Understood the fact that only what is in front of you will be in focus. But what i don’t understand is objects outside the cockpit. If I look ai front of the aircraft even the gate number is super blurry

The view clarity wise won’t be as good as your 4k monitor with a G2 but it shouldn’t be “out of focus and blurry”. Something not right there. Try openxr at 100% and sim render at 100% (ignore the low fps as this is only a test), is it more clear now? Acceptable? You might be able to run 100/100 if u use the NIS mod.

Your gpu, u want that hitting 98 to 100% useage.

The toolbar, press ctrl+0 (zero) or opt into msfs beta version, cures it.

Thanks for the tip. I will try 100-100 and let you know

Do you wear glasses at all?

The beta is now closed and the current live version (1.21.18.0) should include the fix.

No my eyes are perfect ( for now…:joy: )

Always used what is found here and mine is great.

Thanks. I’ll check immediately

I also was annoyed in the beginning by the fact that the image with a HMD (even the G2!) is not perfectly clear. After a while you get used to that fact, and learn to use the - rather smallish - sweetspot of the G2.

Ultimately, you will start loving the experience, despite that bit of blurriness, because flying in VR is such an immersive and fun experience. In a bit over a year, I have logged 230 hours of flying time in VR, and not once did I feel the desire to go back to flying in 2D…

That’s the point. It’a a complete different experience. Totally wow!!! The immersion is 1000 times better amd I didn’t expect that. That’s the reason why I absolutely want to figure out my issues. With integrated navigraph in the toolbar you basically don’t have the need to take the visor off for IFR flight. Anyone knows if there is a way for a VR notepad/keybord to write clearances and atc instructions?

…unfortunately, I don‘t.

What I imagine as a solution is indeed a kneepad (a real one), which has a border with a geometric design, so dedicated software recognizes it as the border of a kneepad, and allows that real world image to overlay the VR image. So, when you look down, you actually see the kneepad (and only the kneepad) and can write on it….

Virtual kneepads are not the same, because it will be difficult at best to write legibly.
My 2 cents…

Sofar, what I do is to listen very carefully to ATC and try to actually memorize all instructions. In the beginning, that was next to impossible. But they say the brain is like a muskle - it get‘s stronger with training…

My experience improved significally when I removed the two protective plastic films inside the glasses…

With G2 you can bring your entire Windows desktop to VR using the follow me function (well documented on this forum). Then you can use graphipcs tablet (e.g. Wacom) to write your clerances with a pen.

What are your texture settings? Texture resolution, Anisotropic filtering, Texture supersampling, Texture synthesis? If they are too low, you will have blurry textures.

Anisostropic at 16x
Suoersampling 2x2
Texture res HIGH
LOD 200
Object detail 100

I have:
Texture resolution: ULTRA
Anisotropic filtering: 8x
Supersampling: 6x6
Synthesis: HIGH

Also: OXR=100, TAA=80, LOD=200

It does not affect FPS much, but all textures look good (though I have 3090).

I don’t remember what I had before these settings, some default low or medium settings, but it made airport runways very blurry.

Can I do it without controllers? I only own the headset

For MSFS 2020 I have never used the G2 controllers. Only Joystick with throttle and yaw axis and mouse. That works. The controllers are shut down during FS sessions.
