New Varjo Aero - Consumer VR Device

I hope to find out soon however mine is still showing an exception with that clearance hold and no estimated delivery.

Hi all
I am trying to find some info on real time scale (in principle) delivery
When you guys ordered yours and when you have received it ? I ordered mine in the first half of Nov, no news so far on dispatch.
Looks like it will be quite a bit of an upgrade from my Reverb Pro. :slightly_smiling_face:

I got in early on day 1 of pre-order - 10/21. My Aero was in the first shipment coming to the U.S. and I should receive sometime this week. It had some clearance issues with customs but appears that is being worked out at this time.

I have the Aero and I use the MS store version of FS2020. I can confirm the Aero works with the store version.

I can also confirm the Varjo software has options for both OpenXR and Open VR. I left both enabled and I am getting a very crisp and fluid image. Certainly better than G2, which I used so far.

Sounds promising!! My Aero is close however Fed Ex still showing a clearance delay. I hope to experience it here soon!

So I contacted both Fed Ex and Varjo this morning, was sent form 5106 and told I need to fill out and return, which I have done.

Will see if this gets my headset out of Fed Ex hell.

Did tou get shimmering in the G2, on buildings and trees? Is it much better with the Aero?

Yes, there was some shimmering with the G2. I noticed it on trees sometimes, always on fences.
With the Aero, I have not yet noticed shimmering. But so far I have only two flights with the headset, so I do not want to jump to conclusions.

Also, my glasses for the Aero have not yet arrived. With my every-day multi focal lenses the viewing experience inside the Aero is far from perfect (as expected). But rest assured: even with that current limitation, the image the Aero produces ist quite stunning. Bright and sharp!

Keep us posted. I didn’t think the Aero would be enough to fix this, but I would truly love to be wrong and get an Aero. Others are saying the jiggling around building windows and edges is gone. Things look solid. Is that what you see? What does it look like with TAA on verses off? Do parked airplanes at an airport shimmer in the distance or do they look sharp with TAA on? What about off? I found TAA made everything look blurry in the Reverb G2 so I kept it off and endured the shimmering. But that drove me crazy too. If everything outside the cockpit window looked like a 1080p monitor but in VR, I’d be happy.

Finally my Fed Ex purgatory is over!! Delivery status has been updated from Clearance Hold to expected delivery tomorrow 1/26 by 12:00 PM. Time to rock and roll.

Thats encouraging to hear that the shimmer may be alot less severe in headsets other than the G2, thanks! Hows the distortion everyone is talking about? Is it irritating? Not much noticeable?

Shimmering is the worst
Especially since it wasnt a big issue before SU5 yet they refuse to aknowledge that theyve introduced a big problem

Congrats, be sure to share your experience here!

same thing here, I had to email paperwork@fedex.com with my tracking number in the subject and they sent me a form to sign via docusign which required my SSN#.
This happened Friday for me but got cleared up after that and I received mine yesterday.

I only got to play with a few hours so far and won’t get a chance again until this weekend. It definitely seemed much clearer than my reverb g2 but it did not make cockpit buttons such as on the g1000nxi any clearer for reading, at least not as much as I had hoped.

I definitely noticed the better colors and brightness and clarity overall though.

Are you happy with it so far? How is the FOV and distortion compared to the G2?

Would you also say less shimmering than G2? Did the shimmering bother you on the G2? Is it a lot better?

This may actually lead me to buy one at some point
 Shimmer is my #1 ptoblem!

I would say less shimmering for sure but I haven’t spent enough time with it yet to say if it got rid of all the shimmering and won’t get to fly again until this Saturday. I’ll be sure to try flying around NYC and London as I’ve seen lots of shimmering there in the past with the G2. I’ll report back this weekend after more testing.

I can say that even with the small amount of testing so far I’m glad I got it and won’t be sending it back or going back to my G2.

As I said, for lack of dedicated monofocal lenses or inserts for the Aero, I am using my every-day multifocal lenses in the Aero. This is far from ideal. Multifocal lenses produce distortions by themselves (during regular use outside the HMD), when I move my head.

I ordered single focus lenses for use with the Aero, but they did not arrive yet. Until I try the Aero with these new lenses, I am reluctant to comment on distortion issues.

Btw, the typical distortion produced by multifocal lenses is something the brain starts compensating after a short while. You simply stop noticing it. I guess the same will happen in the Aero (in case distortion is a real issue in the first place).

Received my Aero late yesterday, only got a few minutes in with it and that was only with IL-2 Great Battles. Looking very impressive so far. Get some movement/distortion of image whilst in menu screens which is annoying. Don’t know if that is just inherent with these type of lenses or if something that can be improved upon further with updates. But flying in the cockpit of the Spit Mk IV was absolutely gorgeous.

Hope to get some really good time in over the next few days testing all my flight sims and some other VR games as well. Still working on dialing in the fit for the most optimal image clarity - it does make a big difference.

Anyone know if we are able to use OpenXR rather than Steam VR with the Aero for MSFS 2020?

“Anyone know if we are able to use OpenXR rather than Steam VR with the Aero for MSFS 2020?”

Of course you can, it has native OpenXR support, make sure the switch is turned on in Varjo Base under System and it will take over ownership of the runtime path.

You will need SteamVR for the tracking only and it should just launch automatically with Varjo Base (VB) to achieve this, no user intervention required.

The VB Motion Prediction does not work in MSFS, so I find it introduces a judder between frames. I’ve not tried it using SteamVR’s OpenXR runtime with SteamVR’s Motion Smoothing on yet, but it’s another layer, so would assume inherant lag
may try this this evening to see if it works as I am one of the weirdo’s that like Motion Reprojection/Smoothing/Prediction
