New Varjo Aero - Consumer VR Device

Yes, MSFS used OpenXR. Performance was never an issue for me. It was very good.

@FarFutureFox I have to agree to all that you have said. It is hyped beyond the reality for sure. BUT this is what I have found.

As long as you keep a fixed gaze on the centre spot (as you have to on the G2) you do not notice the distortion (as much), it is only when you are tempted to look around and keep your head still that it is dreadfully obvious. It is tempting to look around with your eyes because the perceived clarity is there in the periphery, which caused me to not appreciate the need for a fixed gaze. This could be fixed with the support of foveated rendering combined with eyetracking within the games/sims such as MFSF2020.

The chromatic abberation is there regardless as soon as I shift off center gaze.

The Open XR Toolkit has allowed me to get around 42fps close to built up areas and up to 52fps at high altitude, dropping to 38fps in PG areas in the Aero, but that is only by using the tool and synthetically creating sharpness on less detail.

I still require Motion Repro for a fluid experience for sure and I nearly sent this back too, but have stuck with it because I am stubborn and hope the CA and distortion can be fixed via software in the future along with the introduction of motion repro technology.

I would imagine it will only get better as the software matures.

Aren’t u the person in the varjo discord who was reporting seeing lots of distortion, then had an epiphany when u fitted the aero better on your head and reported seeing much less or no distorsion? (Apologies if i have my wires crossed).

yes, I am. I fitted it better AND stopped looking around… then it was better than it was before… hence the epiphany. It is only since then I realised that it was a combo of fitment and the ā€˜looking around’ bit that was causing it to be terrible. In the G2 you can’t look around and have to focus on the sweetspot… with the lenses of the Aero in the right place (correct fitment) you get a much better experience when looking with a fixed gaze.

If the Aero is not within approx 1mm of being in the right spot, the distortion is awful, the CA is mind bending and there is no sweetspot to fix your gaze on.

Not once did I state there was no distortion.

Ah right i couldn’t remember if u said much less OR no distortion, hence my previous post

to be honest, I wish I hadn’t posted there about the Epiphany, but I was so over joyed at the time… it wasn’t til a few days later that I realised that because I had been using my G2 again full time in MSFS and switched to the Aero, that I realised it was only because my eyes were back used to looking straight ahead.
Edit: When I first got the aero, because of the aspheric lenses, the natural thing is to start looking around with your eyes, but the distortion and CA is awful when doing that.

I’m glad u posted about having good fitment even if it wasn’t the sole reason your distorsions were reduced. I think others have said similar about correct fitment being important, its certainly made me more aware for when my aero arrives.

yes, fitment is key, it sits much lower than you would expect. BUT looking straight ahead is also key.

If I was short on cash, I would have sent it back as in it’s current state, it is not worth the money being charged.

Am hoping that the future holds software improvements for both the Aero and it’s capabilies within MSFS2020, both need to improve a lot.

with the G2, you don’t see the distortions as the lack of focus outside the sweet spot means the CA is hidden and the distortion combatted by the Fresnal lenses… it’s plain to see with Aspheric (but easily defeated by software improvements like we have in our phones and digital cameras where there is tuning for each type of lens attached/used).

Thanks for your posts. I have been following the Varjo closely and did place my order in late December. As people started receiving them in early January I was glued to the discord channel to watch all the feedback. It did not take long to get the feeling that varjo arrow was not living up to the hype. I cancelled my preorder as I would not of seen it for months anyway. Since then the OpenXR Toolkit has made Fs2020 so much better in my G2. So I can live with all the other shortcomings of the G2 until a better offering comes out. The anticipated Apple VR sounds really good if it can be had for under $3000 and works with Ms Fs2020.
tp out…

Apple will most likely take what others have tried and make it better, claim ā€˜inventorship’. But, one thing they will never do is to make a device for another platform even if it is good for the industry and consumers.

I upgraded my Aero with the Studio Form strap and counter weights.

I flew with this attached all day yesterday. My first impression was wow it certainly added some weight to the headset. But after using it all day I found it to be balanced now really nice. The Aero as it comes is a little front heavy, and this balances it on the head nicely. Pretty sure I will be leaving this on.
The Aero is not bad in the comfort department. This just seems to improve it even more.

After 2+ solid weeks in with the Aero (flying in a sim every day) I can say I have no regrets. I am finding though it’s two biggest drawbacks for me are FOV ( mainly vertical) and Chromatic Aberration. Wearing the headset in the optimal position for image clarity there is hardly no vertical FOV above the eyes. As far as Chromatic Aberration I think Varjo is continuing to look at improving that with software.

do reverb g2 controllers work with the aero by any chance or new ones have to be purchased as well

G2 (or any other WMR) controllers will not work with Aero.

Yeah you would need either Index controllers or Vive Controllers.
As far as controllers go Index is really cream of the crop. I was fortunate in that I already had an Index kit so was able to use it’s controllers and base stations with the new Aero.

Received my Aero today, the clarity compared to my old hmd’s is next level. Some slight distorsion in the periphery where i don’t normally look but only in certain environments ie the desktop view i notice it but not in games. Really pleased with it

Do I need controllers even if I don’t ever use them? I’ve had several headsets now, each with their controllers, and I have literally never used them. But I’m afraid I might need them to set up the headsets, like to navigate through the setup menu or something like this.

So, my question is do I REALLY need to get controllers?

I think if you want to setup steam vr for full room rather than seated you will need a controller to do the setup.

Roger, I’ll only do seated!

Did you have a G2 before? Did ypu have the shimmer issue? Is it better with the Aero?
