Next-generation Xbox will be a PC, Microsoft says

Bond signaled quite strongly that the next-generation Xbox consoles (plural) would run on Windows, and would not be “locked to a single store.”

It will be interesting to see what transpires.

Consoles have more or less always been pre-build and pre-configured gaming PCs.

And ever since online gaming started the difference between console and PC got smaller and smaller.

So not really surprised that we reach the point where consoles are pretty much pre-build PCs with restrictions in the OS similar to an Iphone (without hacks), to ensure only certain apps can be loaded and the OS can not be edited.

Honestly, I do not see much difference already today. If the XBox would run on regular Windows OS it would be nothing else but a gaming pre-build.

I’m sure I read that the current XBox was running some derivative of a base of windows 8. But correct me if I’m wrong. I’m always intrigues as I started out on XBox. I just hope they throw more VRAM/RAM at the next iteration for the sake of flight simmers. The series X would ahve been great with 32GB memory.

There are quite a few differences. On the console version of MSFS, you won’t be able to fly on VATSIM or IVAO, as these networks are not supported. Peripherals like MCP, FMC, MCDU, and similar advanced panels will also not work. Additionally, the console lags behind the PC in performance-graphics, smoothness, customization and modding options are limited. In short, the PC version offers a much fuller experience in MSFS.

But the future one may have all this functionality don’t you think. Gaming is big money and they obviously need to tap into that. Hence inviting PS5 to the party ,certainly as a learning curve for them on integration of systems.

I am aware of that. This 1 sentence was meant “hardware wise”.

If they would add a full ly featured version of Windows as OS, it would not be different to a prebuild PC with same specs (CPU, GPU, RAM).

New Xbox consoles might finally be a decent option for casual gamers or those with a smaller budget.

I guess for FS it will depend on RAM/VRAM configs. You average gamer probably doesn’t need 32GB RAM/VRAM share, but they really need to push the boundary maybe with a ‘Pro’ tag that does.

I also found it liberating having so many graphics options on PC. They could do with at least giving console users more options even if not as extensive as PC.

They’ll probably go for something more headline grabbing like “8K gaming”. Render at 4K and upscale.

As a console gamer, I would love to have more graphics options in 2024, such as being able to remove the infamous motion blur that we’ve been dealing with since 2020 or the depth of field.

I am afraid, but as it looks today, there won‘t be any Xbox‘es agin. The future of the Xbox as console and Xbox as brand is very very grim unfortunately:

Sony won then…. Now they will become lazy.

Wow, illuminating! XBox is dead and this is why they have moved to PS5! We must all really support PS5 so that msfs 2024 survives.
Really telling statement was about “do not buy an Xbox, rather buy a PS5” because the Playstation has more games, better support and pretty much better graphics etc, etc.
Microsoft has set a 30% profit margin which is impossible for XBox to achieve according to his info.
The question remains then, when are all the XBoxers going to be told their platform is not being supported from …(which year/month)…? AND you now have to buy a Playstation!

Interesting times. Also maybe highlights some of the pressures of MSFS division. The accounts dept is driving the titles. Never a good thing. Here’s hoping the PS5 version keeps this franchise going in the long term.

So it seems the rumours of the XBox being dead are somewhat true, in their current form at least. Extensible hardware should be a must.

Maybe this post’s title is actually correct!

The problem with getting 3rd part apps and products working on the XBOX is down to the how the apps and games are sandboxed within the xbox enviorment i think we would all love to be able to use 3rd part stuff but its jujst the way it is as for is the xbox dead my guess is yes and no, no not in the short term possible in the long term clearly microsoft are looking at handhelds and cloud gaming but that is in the distance future

I still put my chips (ha!) on the next generation Xbox already existing: it’s called the Playstation 5 Pro.

More interesting “XBox will be a PC” speculation here. Console users will be able to switch to run windows to then use external apps like steam or just stay inside console ecosystem.

Also “The new Xbox will also run all games currently available on the Xbox Series X|S library”

It’s almost seems like I could just launch XBox App in a more default kind of way, and then slap an XBox sticker on the front of my PC.

It’s like someone has decided jailbreaking is mainstream & marketable.:joy:
