Nvidia Driver 461.72

I highly recommend, you go for a clean install with DDU Software before you do that

DDU is not necessary ( and cause issues, e.g. )
simple uninstall nvidia driver and choose completly reset

457.30 WHQL ( english )

as long as it runs good, no need at all to update driver

I always use DDU, never had issues with it. works very good for me. just my 5 cents

I also have the RTX2060 and the new driver works better.

Thanks Marc - very helpful

I have an i5 8400 Nvida GTX1060 card with 6mb and 32MG system memory, and noticed much improved graphics and very smooth flying and much better overall performance. Upgraded to the new
driver last night.

NB: I’m cross posting this because there are presently 2 discussions about NVidia drivers, this one more general and one specific to VR:

I don’t know what it’s worth, but looking around the net this morning I’ve found this interesting information from another simmer about 457.30 vs 461.72 and GEF in the mix:

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/game-ready-drivers/13/436584/nvidia-drivers-performing-measurably-worse-than-re/?topicPage=1

This further confirms my recommendations to not install GeForce Experience, but YMMV.

Since my last post above, I performed the below steps and the improvement when it comes to smoothness is quite amazing vs the most recent Nvidia driver(s)!

  1. Ran DDU to make sure I got rid of everything Nvidia related (never had any issues with DDU and think it’s a great tool!)
  2. Installed 457.30 and chose ‘Custom’ to install just the graphics driver and the PhysX driver
  3. Changed the PhysX setting in Nvidia Control Panel to always use my 3090 rather than being set to ‘Automatic’.

Didn’t touch any other settings in NCP. I didn’t even change the ‘Power management mode’ setting from ‘Optimal power’ to ‘Prefer maximum performance’. In the past, I always changed that one.

What I noticed this time not changing it is how the idle temp of my 3090 dropped from around 50 C down to 30 C. At the same time, I didn’t see any performance decrease what so ever. So won’t touch that setting going forward. No reason to stress the GPU like that when it doesn’t improve anything. At least not in my case.

Guess I should also mention this is in VR using the HP Reverb G2. I’m guessing though the performance/smoothness increase is the same on my flat screen. I did notice how panning around in external views etc in 2D before switching to VR was also very smooth after “downgrading” the Nvidia driver.

So for anyone having issues with stuttering etc, I would highly suggest trying out the same thing I did. At least as long as you don’t know for sure some other titles you also play require a later Nvidia driver.

Installed the new 461.72 (clean install, drivers only, no DDU, up from 461.40)
No real change for me noticeable in usage or temps. Still smooth with about 50% usage on RAM, CPU and GPU. Locked at 30fps via nVidia CP.

i5-9400F, 1660 Super, 32Gb Ram

The former is because of the later. When locked at 30, you shouldn’t see any difference whatever you’re doing because you’re already limiting the card to unleash its resources.

Thank you for sharing your experience. You’ve applied exactly the recommendations I’m laying out in “My 2070S Settings” topics and I’m glad this is helping others.

Choosing Optimal vs Maximum perf is a well documented choice in many other places where some did measure a drop of perf when choosing maximum. The reason is you’re hitting the thermal or power protection sooner and end up with a GPU running at a lower perf in the end, and/or oscillating constantly between higher and lower perf. With Optimal, the GPU is asymptotically reaching the highest possible throughput right below the thermal and power thresholds deliver the maximum perf you can.

You can see this as the ABS in braking system: you’re just applying the maximum braking force so that the wheel is at the limit of slipping (Optimal) instead of braking too much and making the wheel drifting (Performance)

Makes sense what you say :+1:

I Upgraded to 461.72 two days ago
Stable upgrade. works very fine on my RTX 3060ti

In VR? Not on mine in VR. In 2D it’s fine.

It seems the latest drivers are meant for the 30series cards. I find 457.30 works best for my 2060super.That seems to be the end of the road for this card.Shady Nvidia
