I am not sure if this will be true for anyone else, but I found part of the problem on my system. There was apparently a stub of the driver I tried when I rebuilt my system still left behind.
I was on 457.09 and did a “clean install” of 466.11. It stuttered like crazy (see comment above) and was totally unusable.
Ran DDU to clean out 466.11 and it seemed to proceed normally. Rebooted and the monitor was still in native/high resolution and not the low res Windows screen with no driver. Checked and Nvidia status/profile app and driver was running - after running DDU. The version was from a couple of months ago when I rebuilt my system and reverted back to 457.09 though I had not installed anything after using DDU to remove 466.11.
Rebooted into safe mode and ran DDU again. It processed normally and on reboot, this time I had a low res screen as is normal.
Gambled and installed 466.11 and system is updated. Performance is better but 466.11 still is unusable.
I am only going by my experience but it looks to me like older versions of the driver (maybe even new versions) weren’t cleaning up properly and left an active driver behind that was screwing things up. I had not used DDU when I reverted from the then new but stuttery driver when I rebuilt the system. This time, two runs of DDU were necessary to totally clean out the old Nvidia cruft.
Anyone having stutters with this new driver, you might try running DDU a couple of times. Once did not clear up my system and left a working driver in place. I can’t explain except it’s just more of that wonderful Nvidia goodness.
But performance on 466.11 is still junk on my system. At least the stutters are low enough I can get into the covpit to test VR but it’s still a mess. Menus are at least usable now but performance is junk.
Nvidia needs to get their software in order. This is just bogus. Now I am going back to 457.09.
Update - reverted to 457.09 and I still have stutters. I hate Nvidia with a passion now. Good luck everyone. This new driver still is bugged and you may or may not have problems.
Update - tried 457.30 and system is working again but not as good of performance as before I installed 466.11. But usable until I sort this out better. I really do hate Nvidia. If AMD would make a fast enough GPU I’d never look back. A 3090 FTW3 Ultra and it can’t run new Nvidia drivers that fix gaping security holes in old Nvidia drivers. Amazing. Jensen - you listening?
