Off Screen Terrain Pre-Caching Causes Extreme Stuttering After Update 7

‘Brief description of the issue:’ After update 7, “Off screen terrain pre-caching” is causing stuttering and performance issues. Setting this option to a lower setting is supposed to provide better performance but it actually makes the performance worse. This is related to other posts about terrible performance when changing to left/right cockpit views, etc.

Theory about what’s happening: A lower value is supposed to load less geometry in memory. But previously, when new geometry needed to be loaded, it would be streamed in and “appear” as objects fading in. It looks like this asynchronous loading has been broken so now the sim actually waits for the geometry to load into memory and won’t render the frames until it is available. Therefore less geometry being cached causes worse performance now.

Provide Screenshot(s)/video(s) of the issue encountered:
Here’s a video. First with the setting on “Ultra” with ok performance and then set to low the performance tanks and has major pauses and stutters.

‘Detail steps to reproduce the issue encountered:’ Turn “Off screen terrain pre-caching” to low setting and then turn your view to force loading new scenery. Performance is worse than with higher settings.

No noticeable difference for me between Ultra or Low on the OSTP-C setting, hovers around 55fps when looking around regardless of what it’s set to. That’s on an Ryzen 5 3600, 1660super (6gb) and 16gb ram, video settings on High.
