Optional Updates?

OK, I see there’s an update that has been released. But I’m also reading about how some issues are fixed while the update seems to create new ones. What I see missing are the messed up burn rates and cockpit tips that can’t be turned off.

But it seems Microsoft continues it’s policy of force feeding updates whether you want them or not. Just like Windows it seems the sim doesn’t give you a choice as to whether or not you want to update. Maybe the current bugs/issues are better than the new ones: I don’t know.

I’m afraid to start MSFS because it will auto update as far as I know. Does anyone know if we can elect not to receive the updates? If so, how?

You cannot. It seems like a good idea, in theory, but then you’ll have to manage different people on different versions of the sim; another whole architecture of software to build, which will come with its own bugs.

So…you’re not going to start MSFS because of an update? I’m flying fine in it. Is this some kind of self-flagellation?

No, it seems to be mandatory
Today trying to avoid patch 183 got a pop up window indicating something like:
“If you close Microsot Flight Simulator now, your software will be UNSTALLED”

Yes, I’m sure Microsoft is punishing you. I’m sure your name is on some list because you complained about the patch.

It couldn’t possibly be that you screwed something up while trying to avoid the patch.

Wow. It’s amazing how nasty some people can be when you seek information.

Why would you not want to update? This is an online game, it only works if everyone has the same version. Imagine it just like WoW or other multiplayer games.

But it’s way better since the patch for me. It runs better, higher fps, less issues. Some people may have new issues but that’s a minority i think. And of course issues are highly exaggerated on the forums because emotions etc. For some people a CTD is like losing someone close to you nowadays.

It’s a world-wide simulator that allows thousands to share a server… there is no way updates can be optional on such a system.

OP wants this because there’s issues in the areas that OP wants to play with. If there’s an offline mode, that might be your best bet. Completely disconnect from the internet and see if you can activate it. If there isn’t one, then you might be out of luck.

I mean there is a play by yourself mode and a cache. It’s not completely out of this world that an offline mode could have been developed and the server would just say update or don’t play online… there are definitely enough possibilities for OP to at least ask the question.

Points noted. However, XPlane and P3D are online simulators with a choice to fly online with others or not. They also allow users to adopt a wait and see option with the updates. I think anyone who has been involved with simulators for any amount of time (like 10+ years) are all too familiar with updates and how they sometimes cause more issues than they fix.

I thought it was a simple question. I didn’t expect some of the hostility as I had assumed everyone would behave in a civil and respectful manner.

To those who responded with how the sim is working after the update or its effects, thank you

Well for me the game just crashed during approach for the first time ever on my first flight after the update…

I mean the Azure thing too. The client connects with different servers, not only for MP but also for streaming scenery, and content servers etc. It’s too complicated to support different versions. This is not the case with P3D and X-plane.

It’s amazing to me how people here always think everything is so easy and simple.

Yes indeed. But it isn’t geared towards offline, it is definitely made for online flying with an option to be offline, that’s all I was pointing out. If it was offline-centered with optional online mode, that would be different.

I want to know? so I can opt out! for now, until a real fix comes.

OK…

As far as iam concered ther was no warning of the incoming patch. came home searched forum anouncments nothing there, ok tomorrow then. startdt midflight (1h in) i CTDed (normaly i dont) and got immediately the mesage that the update is ther ro be installed.

this is no manners, is as if you FedED/UPS guy comes to u superman-punches you and sais here is you big A shipment. sentiment ok delivery not so much. bit heads up vmaybe in the style of many mmos do would be nice.

An temporary opt out would be nice like in Win10. It seams that MSFS catched the Win10 FeatureUpdateBuggines.

Given the patches are currently being released to correct fundamental issues, I don’t feel it is too much of a surprise that they are mandatory. Perhaps there is also an element of forward thinking with respect to the eventual Xbox release and/or to ensure PC users are all using the same version. I.e. to support multiplayer without the additional headache of people using multiple versions of the software.

Recent development roadmap updates have been quite clear in advising what fixes are expected to be included as well as a timeframe for expected release. Granted you may have visit the site to read it or wait for such information to be posted on other forums, Facebook groups or YouTube etc.
