ORBX - South America Mesh

Got the mesh in a recent sale but wonder if it needs certain graphics settings to look the best. Or is the change in texture the same, despite high/low ground texture settings and so on?

Itā€™s nothing to do with textures - just the height mesh. The same textures are used to wrap it. And Iā€™m not really sure they are so much greater than default to be honest. Iā€™ve always been less than stunned by any before and after comparisons Iā€™ve seen.

I know it is only a mesh, but thought it might look better if, for example, ā€œTerrain level of detailā€ or ā€œTerrain vector dataā€ is on a higher settings, or higher shadow settings might bring out details better. In general I think the explanation for the various graphics settings is lacking in detail for someone who isnā€™t tech savvy. The explanations are too much like ā€œimproves visual quality but might affect performanceā€. Ok, but how and what is improved?

Ah sorry I see now I misunderstood your question.

I think the way they do these meshes leads to less of the terrain morphing when the LoDs change, so if you have to run a lower LoD for performance then these will look better in the middle - far distance and not morph as bad when you get closer.

I suppose higher shadows etc would bring details out logically but I donā€™t know what setting(s) it starts to look ā€œbetterā€ with. Probably minimal differences between high and ultra, mostly affected by time of day and cloud coverā€” the only way to see would be take screenshots of the exact same scene / view and compare them with different settings on your system.

I think releasing meshes for Alaska, the Himalayas and South America was a bit of weird choice for ORBX, because even with the most high quality mesh possible, those areas are still gonna look pretty god awful with the lack of good consistent satellite imagery.

Orbx South America mesh conflicts badly with World Update 19 in MSFS 2024. The statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio is surrounded by hills, rocks and vegetation.

Came here just to see if there was any comment on that. Itā€™s a bit sad because in my experience ORBX SA mesh greatly improves the andean mountains in Argentina and Chile which are not part of WU 19. Means Iā€™d have to disable it every time Iā€™m flying in Brazil and re-enable it if flying over the Andes (ie. SAME-SCEL).

I did not examine the impact of the mesh on Chile and Argentina nor have I checked to see if things are different in FS 2020. I discovered it by accident when flying in FS 2024 in Rio with my son. He did not have the mesh. He saw the statue of Christ the Redeemer as it appears in real world photographs while I saw it as set inside a creche surrounded on the back left and right sides by hilltop taller that the statue. As soon as I turned off the mesh, everything looked as it should. I am going to check 2020 later. However, if the effect of the mesh is to make hills and mountains look 40 to 40 feet taller than they are in real life, that could be an issue anywhere in SA.

Just tested SA Mesh with WU19 in MSFS 2020. Works just fine. So the conflict may well be with the SA mesh and the underlying terrain mesh in MSFS 2024. I do note from the Orbx web site that there is no indication that the 2020 mesh products are compatible with 2024.

None of the Orbx meshes are marked as being compatible with MSFS 2024 on Orbx Central. Nothing to stop you putting them into your 2024 Community Folder but they will not work properly with MSFS 2024.
