Out of all the beta testing between MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024 So Far!

I think the two biggest regressions that make the sim unusable for some players would be the EFB nonfunctional with Xbox controllers and the abysmally slow loading times when doing anything in controls settings. If I were a new player and had to set up my 7-8 different profiles with that experience I would have shelved the sim.

The entire UI really needs some optimisation. It can be really slow at times.

Sure, but the regression for controls is nearly unusably bad. 20-30 seconds for each click on the screen, essentially. So even checking one binding on one profile can be a 3-4 minute ordeal.

I don’t know exactly what’s holding this release up, but I can tell you that there are currently 36 #bug-logged and 34 #feedback-logged beta bug reports that haven’t been resolved yet, on top of some other reported bugs in the beta section that haven’t been logged yet.

In the past, they used to set a date, and whatever they had ready at that time (assuming no high-severity bugs), they released it, often to some unhappy customers. I don’t know exactly what they’re working on right now, but if they are whittling away at that list of 70 bug reports, I applaud that.

At some point you have to release. Especially if the backlog shows the next “big items” are months away.

Really, the objective theoretically is to do “least harm” in an SU. That doesn’t mean everything is fixed. It just means this is what could be fixed in a given time period.

Triage is one of the toughest decisions to make in a patch.

I definitely agree with this. However I do think one of the unfortunate themes we have seen with SU’s in 2020 and 2024 are regressions introduced as part of an SU Beta that go unfixed prior to release, and in some cases never seem to get addressed.

This always confused me the most about the Beta and SU processes. One would think that the easiest time to debug a regression is immediately during the Beta. You have a fixed, known list of code changes to look at and an understanding of exactly when the regression was introduced. You would think the vast majority of these regressions would be gone on the next Beta release. This just does not happen very often.

My personal favorite is when the “ATC not scrolling to the bottom” bug was introduced during an SU Beta long ago in 2020, and it’s still there :frowning:

Oh for sure. Watching some of the Dev Support threads, I get the feeling that it’s also a factor of timing and feedback - and yes, resources. I know it feels like only Eric, Sylvain and Boris are the sole Dev folks on the board, but Asobo is farming out those findings to the other parts of the team. Sometimes they can fix it, but then they need confirmation from either the reporter or those who said they had the same issue, and then nothing. I can see how that delays the feedback and confirmation loop. That explains some of the regressions, not all.

SU10, which had DLSS in it, but also a bunch of fixes for XBox, took 10 months. It was held up because one DLSS feature needed a patch from NVidia.

Haven’t played in Months, the games too broken and early access for myself to enjoy it.
Waiting patiently for SU2 to drop and maybe fix some of my largest concerns but i also would not like it to come out and make things worse.
It will be out when it’s ready.

I didn’t say XBox was the problem. There were very important fixes for XBox in SU10. But they were resolved very early in the beta phase. The issue that held it up for 10 months was one of the DLSS modes did not work until there was a parch released from NVidia. That was all entirely PC.

I think that’s their point - Xbox is often made the scapegoat for PC users, blaming all their woes on “they’re making it bad on PC so it can run on Xbox” when your comment was a great example of a time that wasn’t the case at all.

As @Zadma said, I was referring to those that claim that somehow an Xbox version of the sim caused all of the issues in MSFS. Which we agree doesn’t make any sense.

The nerfed airplanes are the final straw for me that makes the sim more depressing than the fun it used to be.

I could deal with the:

  • Too bright lighting
  • Over aggressive eye adaption
  • ATC Menu problems
  • EFB not working in VR
  • Different lighting effects per eye in VR
  • Jagged terrain and spikes at airports
  • Floating airplanes on the apron
  • Airport vehicles driving though airplanes
  • Terrible VR collision meshes
  • Etc.

But so many of the airplane issues should be easy to fix and patch on demand (including the terrible VR collision meshes) as long as they don’t depend on SDK updates.

I thought 2024 was going to speed up those sorts of patches.
