Overall Performance Seems Worse Since Upgrade

Hi all.

Last month I upgraded from a NVIDIA GTX 1070 to an AMD 6800XT. At first I noticed immense gains. The ability to go from HIGH preset to ULTRA preset. However, after a few sessions the gains only really seemed to manifest at high altitude and everything else really didn’t seem worth the upgrade.

For the past year, I’ve been streaming MSFS at High preset while running OBS Studio, Navigraphs, internet browers, two monitors (MSFS on an ultrawide), Volanta, FSLTL, and FSHud ATC along with various mods. Never had any bottlenecking issues except with the GPU. CPU is a Ryzen 7 5800x.

Now MSFS can barely get 15 FPS at a decent sized airport on ULTRA or HIGH not recording or streaming or running any extras.

Other games really show the boost from the GPU upgrade, but MSFS has been an overall regression to the point of ruining just the game experience and also destroying my ability to stream or record or do anything on the PC besides MSFS (even struggle at LOW preset now).

Your CPU is the bottleneck, any gpu can only push out what it’s instructed to do. If you haven’t optimised the voltage curve of your 5800X already I can only recommend you do so (use a negative curve, i.e. undervolt), there are several YT videos explaining how.

Yeah, I figure the CPU is now the bottleneck.

With the old GPU, my CPU had the overhead to encode and run other stuff. Is there a way I can get the CPU and GPU balanced, because now the GPU at any settings is wrecking my CPU and just making everything worse than with the lesser card (first time ever experiencing this…prior upgrades only showed improved performance).

First thing to do is disable any startup items in taskmanager, they are not crucial and be careful to keep any addons including ones you run in the background updated. Test both DX11 and 12 to see which performs best. As mentioned a negative voltage curve tweak can work like magic, I now boost to 4850MHz with zero increase in temps compared to stock (I can easily get 5 gig plus but then it gets hot and loud).

I’m starting to think I should just put my old card back in. The “performance gains” I’ve gotten haven’t really been worth not actually being able to stream or a decent performing flight. Just really weird how it seemed really good initially and has since regressed.

If you haven’t already then max out every graphics setting you can find (not LODs) including in the AMD app, if neccessary bump renderscale. Rather than reverting back to the 1070 the real answer is to make your new gpu work much harder than it does now.
However, more than most I’d say you would really benefit from a 5800X3D
