Package downloads repeatedly fail and restart on slow internet connections

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue: Package downloads would repeatedly fail and restart on slow internet connections. When the download is ~90% complete, the download will stall and it will return at 0% and continue in a loop until the error message “Download failed” appears. This occurs mostly with large (1GB+) packages. When left downloading overnight a few of the package files will be successfully downloaded, but most will fail. The internet connection is 40Mbps, with the network speed measuring 5 MB/s. No other programs or devices are using the internet.

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

Almost all the time, occasionally a download succeeds but most fail.

Haven’t run into this myself, but a few things that tend to help with similar download issues:

  • Reset the app cache (if you’re on MS Store)
  • Temporarily disable antivirus/firewall for a test — some DPI inspection tools cut off large downloads around 90%
  • If you’re on Steam: try switching your download region in Steam settings (Downloads > Region)
  • Could also be a CDN issue, this has been reported before with 1GB+ packages
