PC resources not utilized

Hi all,

I’m wondering if I’m alone in this. See my specs….
The max amount of VRAM I’ve ever seen being used was 11GB of the available 24GB. For system RAM it is even more crazy. I never seen more than 16GB of the available 64GB being used. What the heck is up with that?

For the system memory, I believe the usage was capped when the sim was introduced for XBOX to lock in at what it could handle.

I can imagine that indeed but then check what the resources are and scale to what is possible as this is of course pretty silly to implement like this

What are your sim graphics settings.
You can turn them up more if you aren’t at max in those already.
In particular, TLOD and OLOD in the graphics options.

Optimizations were focused on memory early on for both the PC version and Xbox to benefit from that. The end goal was to make the Xbox version as efficient early on.
Yes the Xbox has 16GB of RAM, so it cant use more than that. The PC version doesnt have that restriction but has all the same optimizations.
In the end, using more RAM or VRAM does not equate more performance.
I’d be more interested in the CPU/GPU side of things, but so far they’ve been pretty well used.

A good idea to explain how I’m running the sim indeed. Thanks for the tip.

So I’m only running this sim in VR. Once running in VR it is just impossible to enjoy in the flat world.

So I’m running a 5950x on a Drak Hero VIII with 64GB g.skill 3600 CL14 and Strix 3090.
Both CPU and GPU undervolted/over clocked. With this board the option to do dynamic OC switching which I tuned in a way I got awesome performance/heat balance.
Single core it goes up to 5.125 and all core 4.65 pulling 123W PPT but never get above 71C even running hours of flights in a row.
The GPU I got running at 2040 clock and memory 2532 pulling a whopping 402W where the chip itself never gets above 68C and Memory junction and hotspot never above 82C. I had to add some cooling blocks extra with thermal tape to the backplate and a fan blowing onto them

I got Resizable Bar, Hags and SMT switched ON.

nVidia Driver 511.23 and OpenXR 109.211.23003

Next to that I applied the NIS with a setting 88 over 65. Lower settings make the labels not as sharp in the cockpit.

Then for the SIM settings…and the frames I got…

To me it is crazy the sim doesn’t utilize the system more than it does and I agree with the first person that replied. I seen more utilizing before the XBox got supported.

Oh yeah….and using the HP Reverb G2

That theory has been debunked many times. It was nothing but one element in a silly conspiracy theory infecting the sanity this community in the weeks after SU5. Not everybody has fully recovered, I fear.

BTW, excessive use of RAM is not a hallmark of sound programming praxis.

yep correct.

If you bump LOD up to 700% in the usercfg.opt, and go fly into heavy photogrammetry, it will still happily eat up more than 20GB RAM.

Efficient use of resources does not mean bad use of resources.

Well, since they lowered all texture quality for SU5 / Xbox, you’re not likely to be able to use all your VRAM as you were prior.

Ditto for system RAM. I used to typically use up to 20+GB prior to SU5. After SU5, it was using less than 8. With the partly restored LOD after SU7, I’m able to see system RAM usage in the 12-16GB range. If you increase your LODs in the usercfg.opt file though, you’ll see higher system RAM usage. Possibly VRAM as well, although I can’t test this since I only have 8GB VRAM on my system.

There’s nothing wrong with your system. This is just the result of dumbing down the code so that it could be shoehorned into the Xbox’s limited RAM.

Your GPU is pretty well maxed out, which is quite common for MSFS.
You have lots of room on the CPU.
Here is a link to a thread and a vid that will give you a lot more info.
Don’t be put off by the link’s title.

Likewise with my CPU i9 11900k.

I see there people disable VT-x in the BIOS but I can’t find it in my bios.

Thanks all for the insight. I sure will dig into that vid

My understanding is this applies to system RAM, not VRAM. I run the sim in 4K ultra +700% LOD (although LOD is CPU mainthread based) and I am constantly chewing up 20GB+ VRAM on my GPU, so it’s definitely using quite a lot more VRAM than Xbox would be optimized for.

Cheers

Indeed… As I said in my previous post…

Ah rgr all good

Just for giggles I set both LOD to 9, game barely seeks over 8gb VRAM?

Second number is true MSFS VRAM use not “allocated”

And then for laughs I slid every conceivable option to absolute maximum to the right including primary scaling at 200 LOL

I was able to count three between screens … err uhm I mean frames.

Oh and task manager was crashing so no screen of that at this point.

This has had me grinding my teeth, too. I don’t want to have to mess about configging just to get the full use of the hardware I bought especially for this sim, because MS/Asobo said I would need it!

I flew DCS World last week for the first time in over ayear (do all my flying in VR) and it maxed out both my 32GB of RAM and 11GB of VRAM. 23fps - sounds low, but it was rock solid, smooth and looked the best I’ve seen it since v2 openalpha was released.

Then back to FS2020 and only a quarter of both RAM being used, regardless of in-sim settings. It’s a joke. I don’t have to adjust any settings at all in DCS to get it to use my resources to their full capacity.

Even IL-2 uses more than this sim, with fairly low sttings.

Edit: on top of that, this is the only sim that has my RTX2080Ti at a constant 85°C whilst underutilising it.
