Hi I have recently started facing system shutdown issue while playing flight simulator. It happens randomly and only when I switch from game to in-game menu. Previously I had not faced this issue. Been playing MSFS from last 2 years.
My specs:-
Dell Optiplex 5090 SFF
CPU: Core i5 11500
RAM: 2 x 16 GB, 3200 MHz
Motherboard: Dell Inc 0FXD80
GPU: PowerColor AMD RX 6400 4GB Low Profile
HDD: 500 GB NVME, 250GB x 2 SSD
Fans: 1 CPU (exhaust), 1 Deepcool (intake)
PSU: 300W
The CPU temps were going 90-99 deg Celsius, GPU temps at 85-90 deg celcius. Since system is still under 6 months more warranty I raised a hardware issue to Dell. They changed the CPU cooler and thermal paste. While CPU temps dropped to 80-90 deg Celsius the issue was still happening. I will now be going for a PSU replacement from Dell. But I am not sure if it is a hardware issue or a MSFS issue since this is only happening in MSFS.
I tried to replicate this issue in other games (GTA 5, COD Warzone) but it did not happen. Also tried doing Xtreme Furmark, Prime95 benchmark tests but the system shutdown is only happening in MSFS. Can anyone help in this regard ?
How much disk space do you have left? With the OS and FS on the same drive? My FS install takes 400gb.
C Drive has left space of 71 GB out of 149 GB (NVME partition)
D Drive has MSFS with left space of 32 GB out of 226 GB (NVME partition)
My MSFS data folder is 158 GB. I have also tried reinstalling the full game from scratch but it did not resolve the issue
I tried removing the GPU and directly connecting monitor to onboard graphics. The issue did not happen. I am suspecting that the power drawn from GPU is leading to PSU tripping. The max TDP of GPU is 70w. I have also checked the total power consumption from all components and it is well within 300w which the PSU can provide.
I think it’s a combination of changes to sim, and also your hardware.
This sim is very hard on hardware.
Recently, my CPU load increases a lot when I’m in the Menu (GPU also, but to a lesser extent) and drops quite a bit when i’m in the game.
Those temps are suspiciously high. According to this website that GPU has a 55W max power draw, and the CPU only 65W. Your GPU only has one fan, but it should be enough.
IMO, there’s no way that CPU should be running that hot. Something is up with that.
And even though your PSU meets the spec for your CPU/GPU combo, I suspect it’s not enough, and you’re experiencing a shutdown when the power draw spikes during menu load.
I’d get a 500W PSU (if possible.)
I calculated the total power consumption of my system and its coming out to be 201W. Not sure if just going from game to in game menu would increase the demand from 201W to above 300W. If I don’t go from game to in-game menu things work fine. Could it be a faulty PSU which is not supplying 300w anymore ? Is there a way to debug this ? Any software that can tell me the total power demand from all components. Tried HWinfo but it only shows Package, IA Cores, GT and GPU power consumption. It will not be possible to get a 500W PSU and the system is Dell Optiplex SFF and at max from Dell it supports 300W PSU. I tried searching amazon for options which can fit inside my machine but did not find any
The only way I know to monitor total consumption is with a power meter. You plug the PC into the meter, and plug the meter into AC power outlet. I have one.
This one costs $12.99 on Amazon US.
I think your temps are more likely the problem. The way I understand it, a CPU will throttle as it reaches a limit, but if it can’t throttle enough it will shut the system down.
I read once that a modern CPU would burn up in just a couple of seconds if you powered it on with no heat sink.

I have noticed that if GPU temperatures are below 85 degrees till a certain resolution 1600 x 900. As soon as I bump up the resolution 1920 x 1090 and temperatures of GPU go above 85 degrees the issue starts to happen. I power draw from CPU + GPU on lowest resolution is ~ 90w - 100w and even on 1080p the power draw is ~ 95w - 110w. Don’t think it’s only related to PSU power draw issue.
i say only, at my system it was the psu
Double-check all power connection seatings to motherboard and GPU.
Do a test run with the case open and the biggest room fan you can find blasting the MB from the angle matching your case flow.
If all fails, change the PSU. Also, keep in mind that power usage is just one critical aspect that can lead to shutdown. Some others are voltage stability and the ability to ramp up amperage quickly and clean.

Here is the update:- Got the PSU replaced from Dell and the issue was still happening. Dell asked me check with GPU company since they think the shutdown is not due to Motherboard, PSU, RAM, CPU.
Next I connected the GPU by keeping it outside the case via GPU riser cable. Now the temperatures from GPU are in range 75-78 degrees under 2K resolution and Ultra graphics and it does not shutdown. Have been running game for last 1-2 hours and the issue just does not happen. I did notice previously that as soon as GPU temperatures go above 85 degrees the shutdown was happening. The GPU is still under 1 year warranty, planning to contact the technical support for GPU since I think it’s a GPU issue.
I would highly recommend getting a watt reader you plug your PC into, and it will give you and accurate reading of the power draw, including watts, amps and volts. Its the only real way to get an accurate figure. I use the following: Amazon.co.uk
Its UK based, so you’ll need the right one for your country.

I can give it a try but I don’t think it will be worth since PSU is already replaced with a new one so it’s not the PSU that’s faulty. The power demands from system are under 300w and the PSU is 80 plus platinum rated. I am suspecting GPU is the culprit here
