I’m at the point now I’m at my Witt’s end. Started msfs last week to find another update was required. Was saying insufficient space, now this is where I got rather annoyed as the game doesn’t actually say how much space is required for the update?
I started with 100gb free space on my drive, not enough, deleted another game which took it too 150gb still not enough. Another, then another… 500gb free space and msfs was still saying insufficient space! So now I’ve uninstalled msfs and am reluctant to re install it as last year it ruined my steam library, I had to delete everything and start again.
What I can’t understand is 1. Why the installation manager for updates doesn’t say how much space is required?
2. Why does this game, that I download from Microsoft game pass create a steam apps folder that causes my steam library to experience problems?
And 3. Why do these mandatory updates corrupt the msfs game files to the point I have to reinstall it at a mega slow download speed?
Has anyone got any ideas please? Don’t get me wrong I really do enjoy this game (when I can play it) it’s just really annoying that every time I’ve tried in the past several months I’ve given up because of a complete headache if problems it causes.
What about C disk or partition?
Check the current free space on your C.
Msfs was installed on drive C with 500gb free space. I found a old 800gb HDD that I installed and tried to move msfs to that but it kept failing.
The msfs installation was about 300gb in size and from what I read the mandatory update is around 115gb. There was plenty of free space. I don’t know if the installation had become corrupt and reporting the wrong size. I did a file verification and it didn’t find any errors.
Thanks.
Does it say what the mandatory update is? I’ve not been required to download any of these as my 40th anniversary edition contains all previous mandatory updates, but I did make a list of the download size & size-on-disk when I downloaded all the optional world, city & (most) other updates available in Content Manager, & can provide that info if you think it would help.
When I installed the standard MS-store 40th anniversary edition about a month ago, the core install on my D: drive was ~ 336 GB. Yours might be somewhat more if it is the Steam version and / or if you purchased one of the Premium versions but is in line with your number.
Did you configure either a manual cache or rolling cache, or install any purchased or community content? If so, you’ll need to add those to your total size on disk.
I seem to recall reading that some additional free space is required to decompress the files.
IMO, 500 GB is the minimum I’d recommend for a complete install with manual & rolling caches, especially if you plan to install any world or city updates that are released in future.
You probably have already read this Zendesk article, but if not, it might help: How to install a new update safely.
Hi sorry for the late response. Been rather busy with work lately.
Unfortunately it never says what the mandatory update is for or the size. I load msfs (anniversary edition) and on the main loading screen it just says mandatory update required.
There is a option to show information but when I press it nothing happens. As for size it doesn’t say what space is required, just insufficient space available.
I’ve installed this 800gb HDD and last night I re installed msfs. When I installed it from ms store it never said what space was required but downloaded it in seconds. I’m assuming this was msfs installer.
Once that was complete msfs started and instantly I was presented with a screen saying mandatory update required. It did tell me this time that 146gb of space was required. So I clicked install and several hours later the game was installed.
Bearing in mind the installation didn’t mention the size of the actual game installation, only the size of the update. Once installed it was close to 300gb on disk. And with my dlc packs it’s now 450gb.
On the old drive it’s rather slow but I’ll live with it.
Thanks.
@ dangerousdids:
Well, I’m glad you are at least able to fly again.
Yup - this is the core program, about 2 GB. On a fresh install, it will then download all the default scenery, aircraft etc. This is “mandatory”. My download was a bit larger than yours:
Thanks. I’m happy to be flying again although on this ancient hard disk loading times are getting quite painful.
25 mins last night from game launch to ready to fly.
I’ve invested in a new drive. I’m hopeful that I can just move the installation to the new drive.
