Permanent solution to stuttering

Hi all, of cource what i will mention it is said before , nothing new, but there is a ton of information and i may help some users. This fix is working if your system can constantly produce 30 at least fps in any condition at least for Nvidia Users. I have a good but not high end system (8800k + 1080ti) and in most cases the fix works for me for months. So lets go , 3 steps

  1. Change whatever resolution you are using through nvidia control panel to refresh rate at 30hz (for instance 1920x1080 or higher to 30hz).
  2. In nvidia control panel you go to Manage 3d Settings , Program Settings , you find Flight Simulator (if you have installed through steam is very easy) and you set Vertical Sync to Adaptive (half refresh rate)
  3. In your Sim put Vsync ON with a target fps of 30fps.
This will produce the most smooth experience you can take right now out of the sim. Problems can arise when the scenery force the fps even slightly below 30 (for instance 25-26) This is very rare and can be mitigated by lowering volumetric clouds and rendering value. Hope it helps.

while this may work and allow someone to fly “normal” for a change, i’m also of the mindset if I have to dumb down my system to help a game perform then the problem isn’t my system and the sim should be optimized better.

Yes that’s what I have done and the smoothness is great and stuttering seems to have dissipated on approach and landing using the FBW a320 development version

Using fraps it does dip to low 20 FPS on approach to a big airport but I don’t notice stuttering and I only know that as I can see my frame rate so I totally concur with the OP

The only thing I would add is keep your monitor refresh rate to say 60mhz then apply the half refresh rate in nvidia control panel then apply step 3 in the sim

If you keep getting fixated with FPS then this and previous sims wil drive you crazy , just go flying and enjoy

Until fully optimised we will not get 60 FPS on approach and I think some , not all I might add , expect that from this sim as they will always say “oh but I can get that in XYZ game “

Msfs is not coded like that so stop worrying about your frames and enjoy a smooth sim

Oh and by the way the majority of my settings are on ultra

Specs:
CPU 10700k overclocked to 4.9ghz
GPU: RTX 2080 super
32 Gb ram 2400 MHz
1 TB ssd

In my experience stuttering happens when loading/unloading scenery (like, anywhere in Los Angeles) or sometimes at boundaries of large airports (for instance, south of KSEA). Setting a 30fps v-sync lock doesn’t help with that for me.

Discovery: Swap from Nvidia 1080Ti to AMD 6800XT created huge amounts of stutters: I initially had confidence that Nvidia made relatively clean uninstalls resulting in a “clean” registry: Well, not in my case! Running CC cleaner , did that help? NO! It did not seem to detect anything. So: I ran regedit and used search key “Nvidia” and found many entries, I forget how many but assuming way over 20 and I also found Windows(86) directories and *exe files still there ! Cleaning this up has given me with my 6800XT : 30-60 FPS on ground and 60 FPS in the sky regulary on ULTRA settings mainly runniing 1440p. A whole different world ! (I have limited FPS to 60 in the sim)

How to uninstalling graphics drivers.

This isn’t a solution but rather a workaround for PCs that are struggling with general performance. It also won’t address the minor but consistent stuttering that was introduced into the sim.

Strongly disagree. It is a solution. Except if you expect from a sim the DAY IS OUT 2020 ( remember for fsx it took almost 3 years for technology to catch up with it) to run at constant 60 fps. Concerning micro stutters ( when panning cameras mostly) yes it could be better optimized.

Cleaning the registry entries of Nvidia after a new installation of driver must be a standard procedure, clean install is paramount.

Joyless: Yes, and historically speaking I have always uninstalled first before installing a different vendors’ GPU. However, I have previously found Nvidia “uninstall” software to be reliable. This time around the “uninstall” turned out not to be clean. When uninstalling Nvidia GPU I expect them to do a real job and take their garbage out of the registry. This should not be difficult for Nvidia to take care of, and so I find them less reliable and less professional, sorry that is my opinion of the matter.

no thanks… 30 FPS is a nono… it’s like return to the past

Its ok for a flight sim but not ideal as long as it does not dip below or stutter. I am not a huge fan of it. Introduces too much input lag.
I find the sim feels fluid around the 45fps mark at least for me.

Thia with the registry is interesting. I always clean 3 files in registry now i made a search and found many with nvidia. Is it safe to remove all of them?

Joyless : Good Question: I still have some references and lots of them to Nvidia sound HDMI, for what reason I am not sure and they refer to audio output to my two 27" 1440 monitors. I left those entries alone. I could take a backup of the registry (make restore point) and then give it a go.
