Photogrammetry in 2024 vs 2020

I’ve seen a lot of video coverage of MSFS2020 which shows amazing, highly-realistic photogrammetry. I was very excited when I downloaded MSFS 2024, believing the photogrammetry would be even better.

Unfortunately, I find the scenery to look very “graphical“ and non-photogrammetric at all. Can anyone explain why this would be or is it just me? I have photogrammetry enabled.

Is there a way to improve it fix this on my end?

A lot of things have been corrected by hand over the years with 2020 and the newest areas have nearly unlimited LOD at times smoother than 100LOD did a couple years ago. 2024 looks like it went backwards in some cities and looking around the edges of an airport. But the vertical landscape is still quite poor in 2020, where 2024 aces it most of the time. I will give it that all day. Flying in remote mountain areas without out melted wax textures can be quite breathtaking in 24. I do find 24 to flip-flop even in the same seated session between brilliance and WTF with PG. Still not sure what to make of it.

I have compared many of my 2020 videos of photogrammetry areas with 2024. In all cases, 2020 looks better and much more photorealistic. I can’t say for sure why. Sometimes the photogrammetry in the MSFS just looks sharper. However, I think that the new 2024 vegetation in particular doesn’t fit so well into photogrammetry areas. What’s more, the overly intense colors of the vegetation make everything look a little unrealistic.

I wonder what you mean with photogrammetry looking “graphical”. Maybe one or two screenshots would help.

I only fly FS2020 in 4K and I find the graphics amazing and very natural.
I have seen some videos of FS2024 with very unnatural color casts, I think they are due to the use of color corrections in an attempt to manage the seasons.
The graphics of FS2024 do not convince me at all even if I read many posts of users who see in FS2024 a better graphics than FS2020.

I’d go out on a limb and say the Orbx trees in 2020 look better than 2024’s native ones. Although you can’t really walk up to them in 2020, but from a flight sim perspective. The colors are more mixed and subdued, it’s a pretty good cheap add-on.

Meaning it doesn’t look “photographic”, instead it looks somewhat cartoonish at times.
