Photogrammetry On or Off?

I was browsing the internet to see if there were any fixes for FS2020 water physics, how aircraft behave when in water. It’s pretty sub-par compared to the flight physics. I haven’t found any way to improve it, even though simmers have been complaining about it for 4 years.
This video, though unrelated, got my attention.
I never thought about turning photogrammetry off as I thought it made citiesd/objects more realistic. This video is saying water visuals are much better with it off. This doesn’t address what I was looking for but I’m now curious how other simmers feel about the photogrammetry on-off optiion.

I watched that video a while ago and it’s nonsense. First of all: photogrammetry has nothing to do with the water.

And then it’s just a matter of taste (and perhaps performance). If you don’t mind generic autogen buildings everywhere that often don’t look anything like the real thing, turn PG off.

On the other hand, if you want cities to look like the actual cities with the real life buildings in all the right places and your bandwidth can handle the additional volume of data (and you don’t mind some wonky PG trees) then turn on PG.

Either way, your water will be exactly the same.

That was my first reaction. On the other hand I have read many posts (and experienced myself) “melted/distorted” buildings with PG on. I assume that any addon scenery (cities, airports, etc) are not affected by PG- is that correct? In other words, if I have addon scenery it doesn’t matter if PG is off in that area and it will show the accurate buildings without PG- it only makes the default scenery/cities more accurate/real life?

Not related but… PG, online traffic, (all) POIs - DISABLED and msfs2020 works like charm on xbox :smirk: BTW

Yeah, it can look like that when the bandwith is not keeping up or when you are simply too close or your Level of Detail settings are too low. PG isn’t good enough to be experienced at street level (yet). Also, the PG quality can vary wildly from city to city, depending on the quality of the data. I find that San Francisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas have very good PG quality. Others not so much.

Properly designed scenery should flatten/remove the spots it modifies. For example the Drzewiecki Design Seattle scenery integrates its custom buildings nicely into the Seattle photogrammetry. At least it does in FS2020. Haven’t tried it with FS2024 yet.

Well, I’m certainly talking FS2020…

So it sounds like, if you have good addons for (most of or all of) the airports/places you like to fly, turning off Photogrammetry won’t hurt and will actually improve much of the other places, not to mention giving you a couple of FPS.
