PICO 4 what do you think?

here is my performance graphs. 60fps that . GPU load 80-90% and HIGH/ULTRA settings. If i lower settings, GPU load is coming 57% and CPU load is still 18% in total. So this is some kind a glitch in simulator, that it cant be over 60fps. Hearing same is with another flight simulator.

I am a pico 4 user since one week and I must say I am very pleased with it. I stream via the virtual desktop app (setting is Ultra, ASW is auto), the sim settings are all Ultra, TLOD = 200, DLSS is balanced)
The experience is very smooth.
Since the headset is unteathered, you need a superb Wi-Fi connection with minimum 800mbit/sec. Otherwise you will suffer from quality loss.
Besides of MSFS the headset performs als great in stand alone mode (quite some good apps and games) and in steam vr in general (currently playing „The Room VR“ on PC also streamed via virtual desktop)

One remark: do not use the built in streaming of the pico - it does not work very well. You absolutely need to purchase the virtual desktop app - there is no way around it unfortunately…

I saw VRflightsimguy saying he now gets better performance (on the 4090 at least) with the Pico and Virtual desktop in god mode than with the G2… that’s pretty amazing. I need to revisit this because the performance overhead was the only thing stopping me from moving to the Pico 4 permanently.

Don’t know what the VD dev did to change things so dramatically.

I notice it very slightly too, it’s like the centre of rotation is too close to the front of the headset… it’s only slight for me but I do see it in the right situations.

There is a new AMVR interface now, might be worth a try?

Thanks for flagging the cover but I already returned my P4, I’m back with my trusty quest 2 for now. It has highlighted to me that exact head and face shape can make a big difference on hmd experience!

I watched VR Flight Sim Guy’s video today and was impressed with his experience, so on a whim decided to order a Pico 4, as I have a 4090 and a 5800X3D. I currently have the G2 and with a 4090 I can set OXR to 160%, TAA 100% and with DLSS on quality and mostly ultra settings get really good sharpness and framerates. Still, the sweet spot is tiny and I just hate Fresnel lenses. I’m unsure yet whether to buy a new wifi 6 router to run wireless for the P4, or go the tethered route but with an ethernet cable to USB C adaptor, which also has a USB C charging port to lengthen the battery life. Time will tell if the P4 is worth it, or to save up for something like a Pimax Crystal. If I don’t like the P4 I can always sell it for a small loss.

Pico 4 is the way. It is allready huge improvement from G2 even that is beeing still deleveloped. Virtual streamer are again beein updated today, it is que in Picos headquarters to be accepted. And pico is getting updates also during next year. And there is also this hidden settings apk, with it you can make your pico more colourfull (dl link by user https://discord.com/channels/564087419918483486/1027563564480864356/1054639391529779230 , you have to be in Pico official server to download it and sideload it to pico4)

I am currently flying with pico 4 (rtx 4090, 5800x3d)

  • high settings msfs2020, some are in ultra, some are low but mostly HIGH. Tlod 150
  • god like mode 3120x3120
  • 110% steamvr resolution 3531x3531 (this is the resolution that my pico 4 has in gaming)
  • 90hz in pico 4 and VD
  • capped 45fps in NCP
  • having max of 90% of gpu load, so i have 10% head room for gpu. Gets rid of major stutters. 80% would be even better and i am having that in countryside.
  • 130mbps bitrate, buffering disabled
  • usb-c to ethernet adapter with 900mbps constant and errorless bandwidth. So smooth and fast.

There is this microstuttering still, but so tiny that i have been used to it.

I can confirm an enormous change in performance from when I first tested, it’s now at least on par with the G2 if not slightly better in MSFS.

With the 4090 at native God mode resolution (albeit OXRTK foveated rendering at quality/wide) and most stuff at a mix of high and ultra I’m getting gpu frame times of around 14-16ms (equivalent to a potential of around 65fps)

Having a blast with this. Even only at High settings it’s really great.
5800x3d with 6800XT

I watched VRFlightSimGuy’s video and he suggests a minimum 3090, if not 40XX.
I currently have the 3080Ti and G2 - what do the folks here think about whether it’s worth considering the change to a P4?

You don’t have to run it in godlike mode(3120x3120), so there’s no need for a 4090 if you want to enjoy the sim.
Of course having the fastest card will allow you to up all the settings, for me it’s not necessary to enjoy it.

I guess VRFlghtSimGuy advised the serie 40xx because you have to run it in God Mode to have something better (or nearly similar) than a G2…

I ordered the pico 4 two times and had to sent it back because of a shifting warping effect of distant objects. It annoyed me to much be bothered with it. So I am again without a headset. I am waiting on the pimax Crystal now and I hope this headset will finally be the one. If not I might give up on VR all together
It has been 7 years now and still I am waiting on a real VR 2.0 headset. That Facebook/Meta bought up half of the emerging VR industry in it’s infancy really did not do it any good in the long run.

I have watched a lot of comparison videos but went for the Quest 2.
Because the Quest 2 has better software support. It has some nice games not on Steam like Stormland, or Lone Echo, or Oblivion Afterlife.
And the picture quality is really good, I can clearly read all the cockpit labels in DCS and Flight Simulator 2020.

The Pico has literally the same disappointing field of view. Yes it has some fancy pancake lens motors but whatever… the middle setting should fit all eyes in the Quest.

The only advantage the Pico 4 has it´s not so heavy on the front. You absolutely need to buy the Elite Headstrap with the counterweight on the back, otherwise the Oculus Quest 2 will get unbearable uncomfortable over time. With the Elite Headstrap it can be worn for an infinite amount of time without ever becoming uncomfortable.

With the Elite Headstrap it is so nice and comfortable to wear.

I would only have considered buying the PICO4 when it came equipped with OLED screens and way more broad field of view, but it uses the same LCD technology and it has the same field of view so there is no more real advantage over the legend itself, the Oculus Rift (alias “Meta Quest 2” but it will always stay the good old OCULUS RIFT for me!)

Pico 4 has a bigger FOV than Q2, especially if you replace the standard facegasket. P4 has also higher resolution, and the way better edge to edge clarity than the Q2 or G2. No idea where you compared the two headsets, but I have the Q2, G2 and Pico4. G2 wins on audio and out of the box comfort, but the cable is still annoying, even when sitting. Q2 has the better software support over all. But in terms of visuals Pico 4 + VD + godlike mode wins easily.

By the way, you can play the oculus store games on the P4 through VD, not a real reason for a Q2.

Good to hear. My Pico 4 has just been shipped. If I find the audio too poor, I’l just switch to my surround sound system, which has way better bass and annoy the wife, lol.

Came across a through the lens comparison video of the Pico 4, Quest 2 and Quest Pro. The Pico 4 does very well and although the Quest Pro clearly has the best lenses, it also shows chromatic aberration and the lower res panels have obvious screen door effect.

Now I don’t know the details of how the Pico 4 was connected to the PC. Wireless using their app is pretty crummy while virtual desktop is way better, especially if you tether using an ethernet adaptor to the USB-C lead.

To me the face gasket is the biggest problem, thats why i removed it and tried a mod, which is ok, but nothing compared to a real replacement from VRCover or AVMR. But at least AVMR has released a replacement by now, that I hope to get after the holidays.

Yeah, I’ll see how it fits me first, but from what I have read, a thinner and softer replacement that fits properly and gives better FOV is likely on the cards.

What settings do you use with pico4 and godlike mode.

I have been experimenting and thought I got it nice earlier but after about 10 mins it got quite ‘bumpy’ as I loved head around. Fps said it was still good but it definitely wasn’t smooth.
I also find objects anything other than very close don’t have a lot of definition. Like other aircraft or airport signage.
